1 CY-FAIR HoMES G Go Green is now used for recycling, reusing, and reducing, and the Cy-Fair community is getting greener and greener all the time. Businesses, schools, neighborhoods, and homeowners are all getting on board to help conserve the environment and ultimately save the planet. In the marketing department we work with our IT department making sure our members get the stuffers and other marketing pieces electronically, says Leslie Martone, the Business Development Manager for Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union. We usually do shred days in July, and we ve pushed the use of electronic statements instead of paper, adds Martone. Cy-Fair Schools Join the Movement One of the more obvious Go Green trends is the presence of recycle bins at all of the schools. Besides our community effort with recycle bins, we also recycle print cartridges, inkjet cartridges, and cell phones, says Stephanie Fisher, Academic Achievement Assistant at Cook Middle School. Inside the school we recycle newspaper and paper and take the funds we earn to purchase educational supplies, continues Fisher. Hancock Elementary takes the Go Green movement even further with a sensory garden to teach the students water conservation techniques. The garden gives students Going GREEN Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle in Cy-Fair When did the definition of Green change from a color created by mixing yellow and blue to a national movement that includes the environment, nature, energy conservation, and the reuse of materials? 32 CY-FAIR MAGAZINE Visit CyFairMagazine.com for Cy-Fair jobs, events, news and more. Written by Laurie Roddy an idea of where food comes from and what it takes to get the food from the land to the table. Cy-Fair ISD has even included a green aspect to its Annual Action Plan. It plans to increase the amount of recyclable materials collected by the district s recycling center and increase the tonnage of recyclable paper collected at campuses by 5%. With over 70 campuses, any recycling by Cy-Fair ISD makes a substantial impact on the area. Green in the Neighborhood Other ways Cy-Fair is going green is through neighborhood involvement. Go Green Coles Crossing hosts several events each year, including an Earth Day Festival, Christmas Tree Recycling Drive, and Computer and Monitor Recycling Drive. We collected approximately 60 computers, 45 monitors, 28 printers, multiple scanners, and other computer/networking equipment, says Brigitte Rothenbucher of Go Green Coles Crossing. We took everything to Techs & Trainers, Inc. on Bellaire in Houston, adds Rothenbucher. Techs & Trainers is a non-profit organization that recycles and refurbishes obsolete or non-working computers, monitors, printers, and other peripherals. They offer work for people with barriers to employment and provide computers to those

3 with special needs. Of course, one of the best ways to Go Green is to plan a community with this purpose in mind from the beginning. Bridgeland is doing just that. This master planned community is based on five building design principles. Conservation and recreation Regional transportation connectivity and access Mixture of uses Local pedestrian-scale connectivity and economic sustainability Recycling Saves Resources Cy-Fair residents are also taking the green movement seriously by recycling whenever possible. I ve gotten to where I recycle every piece of paper and cardboard that comes in the house, says Lacey Telge of Willowbridge. I recycle because I m an environmentalist. I believe the fewer resources we use the better we will be in the long run, adds Telge. I have a built-in recycle station in our home, brags Beth Irwin of Jersey Village. We recycle glass now at a place on Brittmore thanks to my neighbors who told me about the place, says Irwin. Eco Friendly Homes Another way to Go Green is to embrace the idea of Eco Design as part of interior design. With the expanding amount of available products, most homeowners can become eco friendly by following some of these suggestions. Beth Irwin and her son Tim set up a recycling station in their home 34 CY-FAIR MAGAZINE Visit CyFairMagazine.com for Cy-Fair jobs, events, news and more.
4 Buy local furnishings Replace light bulbs with energy efficient bulbs Choose low-voc (volatile organic compounds) paint Create a recycling center in your house Reuse materials for other purposes Reduce energy consumption by turning off lights and unplugging unused appliances Conserve water With Eco Design, designers consider the connection between the home and the surrounding environment to create the least invasive and obtrusive structure as possible for the environment. Going green not only saves the environment, it also saves money. Each ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, and 7,000 gallons of water. The less we use the less we pay for. And saving money is a green trend we all like to participate in. CFM LAURIE RODDY has been a writer for over 25 years and recently completed the book, 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Houston. She is also a writer for Away.com and Suite101.com.
