Relevant Research Activities ADVANCED SOIL STABILIZATION Stabilizing agent Impact and benefits Traditional Cement Improved bearing capacity Drying effect Lime Highly environmentally intrusive technologies Proposed Solutions Polymer-based products Microorganisms Foamed Bitumen Emulsions Fly ashes Combined treatments Improved bearing capacity Allow using low performing materials Can be applied in environmentally sensitive areas Reduced water consumption Water susceptibility and absortion reduced
Relevant Research Activities WASTE VALORIZATION THROUGH PAVEMENT DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION SCRAP TYRES SLAGS RICE HUSK ASH Improve mix durability (resistance to moisture, oxidation and fatigue) Higher resilient modulus Noise reduction Reduce top-down thermal cracking Reduce bottom-up reflective cracking Substitutes coarse aggregates in pavement construction. Makes best use of the mechanical strength and skid resistance of slag particles. Enhances binder adhesion Promotes high frictional and abrasion properties Mineral admixture for Portland cement Concrete Enhances concrete strength and durability. Can replace limestone as mineral filler in asphaltconcrete mixtures.
Relevant Research Activities OPTIMIZATION OF THE DESIGN OF PAVEMENTS The technologies aforementioned allows proposing new approaches to pavement design. Enhancing energy, time and construction materials savings and associated costs, although the performance of the pavement structure is never diminished. Concepts and designs are supported by key software tools. Such approach allows understanding the extent in which other solutions such as nanotechnologies or other added value products can be used for road design and construction purposes.

CONCLUSIONS Challenges and oportunities The current context requires to address the challenges and opportunities that the need for sustainable road infrastructures put in front of us. The implementation of innovations requires the active participation of Regions as they play a key role in setting the standards for the road network that support the local economy. Examples like the future GPP Directive show there will be means for delivering innovations, contributing to enhance productivity and competitiveness at regional level.
ACCIONA Infrastructure Research, Development and Innovation 160 professionals, 3,500 m 2 of surface area, 17 labs and 2 production workshops (1,200m 2 each) Main areas of application: new materials, ecoefficient construction processes, nanotechnology, robotics and 3D visualization. ACCIONA's goal is to lead the way technologically in all its activities.
