1 16717 Jacintoport Blvd. Houston, TX Phone: Fax: Technical Data & Safety Bulletin Hexylene Glycol (HG) PRODUCT OVERVIEW Hexylene Glycol (HG) is an organic compound with the formula: CH3CHOHCH2C(OH)(CH3)2 This clear, colorless liquid is widely used as an industrial coating solvent. HG exposure is possible in both industrial and consumer applications. Occupational exposure limits have been established to control the allowable amount of exposure in workplace settings. Consumer exposure, generally infrequent and short in duration, is also highly dependent upon the conditions under which hexylene glycol is used. See Health Information. Hexylene glycol does not cause adverse health or environmental effects at levels typically found in the workplace or in the environment. PRODUCT USES The principal end uses of Hexylene Glycol are in industrial coatings (45%) and as a chemical intermediate (20%). Hexylene glycol is also used as a selective solvent in petroleum refining, as a component of hydraulic fluids, as a solvent for inks, as an excipient in pharmaceuticals, in cosmetics, and as a cement additive. Human exposure will be both in occupational atmospheres and from use of consumer products containing Hexylene Glycol. Page 2 of 5

3 HEALTH INFORMATION Hexylene Glycol has a low order of acute toxicity. Vapor concentrations of 50 ppm are irritating to the eyes, 100 ppm are irritating to the nose, and 1000 ppm to the respiratory system. The ACGIH has established a 25 ppm exposure limit based upon eye irritation. Inhalation exposure to saturated hexylene glycol vapor at room temperature (approximately ppm) did not produce acute intoxication or lethality to laboratory animals The acute oral LD50 is between 2000 and 5000 mg/kg. The data available from guideline studies indicate that hexylene glycol has a low potential to irritate the skin and that affects are reversible. The dermal LD50 is >2000 mg/kg (range> g/kg). There are no known cancer hazards. POTENTIAL FOR EXPOSURE There is a potential for occupational and consumer exposure through inhalation and skin contact although exposures through inhalation are expected to be low due to the low vapor pressure. Based on the uses for Hexylene Glycol the public could be exposed through: Workplace exposure This refers to potential exposure to HG in a manufacturing facility or through evaporation in various industrial applications. Generally, exposure to HG of personnel in manufacturing facilities is relatively low because of the low volatility and because the process, storage and handling operations are enclosed. The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) permissible exposure limit (PEL) to HG vapors is 25 parts per million (ppm) per an 8-hour work day. Consumer use of products containing HG This category of exposure is highly variable depending on the products used and the conditions under which they are used. Exposure of the majority of consumers is through its use in cosmetics, antifreezes and hydraulic fluids. Exposure to aerosols is possible as a result of industrial spraying with paints containing hexylene glycol. Indirect exposures via the environment (e.g. ingestion of surface water contaminated with hexylene glycol) are also possible. Environmental releases Hexylene Glycol can enter the environment as emissions from its manufacture and use as a solvent. It naturally occurs as a plant volatile and is released during the microbial degradation of animal wastes. Chemical manufacturers are committed to operating in an environmentally responsible manner everywhere business is done. Efforts are guided by in-depth scientific Page 3 of 5

4 understanding of the environmental impact of operations, as well as the social and economic needs of the communities. Industrial spills or releases are rare; however a spill may pose a significant flammability issue. REGULATORY STATUS Refer to the Safety Data Sheet for more specific information. Hexylene Glycol is not subject to the reporting requirement of CERCLA. Hexylene Glycol is not SARA Section 313 chemical. Hexylene Glycol is on the U.S. TSCA list and is included in the EEC's EINECS, Canadian DSL, Australian and Japanese chemical inventories. STORAGE AND HANDLING General industry practice is to store hexylene glycol in carbon steel vessels. Hexylene Glycol should be stored only in tightly closed, properly vented containers away from heat, sparks, open flame or strong oxidizing agents. Handle empty containers carefully. Combustible residue remains after emptying. Provided proper storage and handling precautions are taken, Hexylene Glycol manufactured and delivered by Monument Chemical is stable for at least 24 months from the date of manufacture. Hexylene Glycol that is subsequently repackaged, handled and/or delivered by third parties may have a different shelf life and may require third party shelf life studies. On-going studies of Hexylene Glycol held in glass at ambient temperature are stable for at least two years. Product past the retest date should be evaluated to confirm that all specifications are within their limits before use.
