2 THE WASTEWATER PROBLEM ANNEX IV OF MARPOL /8 ENTERS INTO FORCE all new vessels, from September 00 with immediate effect, all new ships of 00 GRT and above and new ships of less than 00 GRT which are certified to carry more than persons are required to comply. For existing ships it will apply five years after the date of entry into force, namely September 008 DRAFT AMENDMENTS TO RESOLUTION MEPC.(VI) the Drafting Group on Sewage Related Issues met on the th and th April 00. The terms of reference were to agree to the draft MEPC resolution on the Revised Guidelines on implementation of effluent standards and performance tests for sewage treatment plants. Although only in draft form, it is widely speculated that this requirement will be adopted during, or possibly even before, the year 00. The draft guidelines state that an approved sewage treatment plant must meet the standards indicated below. The proposal also states that, when ships are operating approved sewage treatment plants, Annex IV also provides that the effluent shall not produce visible floating solids or cause discolouration of the surrounding water. Proposed new effluent standards are: (i) a geometric mean of no more than 00 thermotolerant coliforms/00 ml; (ii) a geometric mean of total suspended solids (TSS) of mg/l if tested ashore, or a geometric mean of total suspended solids of 0 mg/l above the ambient water used for flushing purposes if tested onboard; (iii) a geometric mean of -day Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) of no more than mg/l; (iv) a geometric mean of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) of no more than mg/l; (v) a ph value of the effluent between and 8.. 3 ACO Maripur - Membrane Black and Grey Water Treatment ACO Maripur exceeds the very latest high standard of waste water treatment for marine applications. With low-pressure micro-filtration units it has the following advantages: Compact process due higher concentration of activated sludge (MLSS) within the reactor. This enables limited space on ships and marine structures to be used more effectively. Treats all wastewater, black and grey, in one reactor reducing space requirement and minimising cost. Removal rates significantly higher than those required by current legislation providing operators with the confidence that they will meet all likely future legislation and may even be allowed to discharge wastewater in areas where this is currently prohibited, i.e. zeroemission areas. Harmful and expensive secondary chlorination, indispensable in conventional systems, is not necessary for biological membrane systems, which form a physical barrier preventing overboard discharge of the activated sludge, suspended solids, bacteria and viruses. Use of micro-filtration units, instead of conventional settlement, negates the effect of vessel movement. Simple, largely automated process, easily operated by ships crew, reducing acceptance problems. 4 Typical commercial vessel installation ACO Maripur bioreactors are manufactured in AISI stainless steel as standard. Developed as a modular system of four basic sizes they treat wastewater from, 0, 00 and 00 people. They are manufactured from stainless steel AISI 0 or with integrated sludge trap. Ventilation Grease (FOG) accumulates in the upper cone with the sludge dropping to the lower cone. The grease is maintained in a liquid form by heating the upper cone. The cleaned water drains freely and continuously through the grease trap. The accumulated sludge and grease is drained to collecting tanks. Product benefits include: Inlet Sediments Grease Outlet Fully resistant to ship movement. ACO Lipator and Lipatomat grease traps are currently the only pressurised systems (patent pending) available in the marine market, eliminating re-mixing due to movement and vibration. 5 ACO Fulbora Biological In-Line Grease Traps The Need for Fat, Oil and Grease Management - One of the greatest drainage problems faced in galleys and food processing areas is the accumulation of fats, oils and greases within the drainage system. As FOG s cool in the drainage system they can solidify. If untreated, accumulation eventually leads to drainage system failure and creating a health hazard within the food preparation area and reduced efficiency of the sewage treatment plant. All ACO Fulbora biological grease traps work on the same principle, a biological activator is periodically injected into the connecting drainage pipe upstream of the trap. The mixture of contaminated water and activator flows into the trap and through a sediment bucket. The sediment bucket removes any larger particles that may be present in the drain waste. Lightweight polypropylene sediment basket with handle and location guide for easy maintenance. 8 The physical capacity of the trap provides a separation area where relative density differences allow finer solids to settle to the trap floor and less dense FOGS to rise to the surface. Separation occurs relatively quickly, thereby allowing less contaminated water to flow to the outlet drain during periods of intense use. Floating FOGs are gradually broken down by the biological activator and the resulting liquid is then discharged to the sewage treatment plant or holding tank. Thus the ACO Fulbora Biological Grease Traps provide complete biodegradation of FOGs (Fats, Oils and Greases) in the drainage system ACO Clear Biological Activators - unlike strong acid or caustic drain cleaners, ACO biological activator works safely, but more slowly. They can be used to unblock drains and can be used to replace aggressive caustic and acid cleaners. ACO biological activator works in two distinct ways on the FOG wastes that settle in the drainage pipe work and grease trap system: i) The activator introduces an enzyme that assists the natural biological process of breaking down long molecular chain FOG s into a manageable solution to then be discharged safely into the foul drainage system. ii) The activator introduces other micro-organisms that actively feed on the FOG s present in the solution.

6 MODD and BODD Automated Dosing Systems (Mains operated drain dosing / Battery operated drain dosing) Choice of mains or battery operated dosing units enables maximum operational efficiency of grease management system to be established quickly. Microprocessor controlled dosing is programmed via convenient LCD display touch pad input panel for easy set up and programme modification where, for example, the operating envi- ronment changes due to seasonal variations. Water resistant ABS Enclosure conforms to IP M for water and dust ingress prevention. MODD unit delivers 0ml per minute of biological activator, BODD-ml/per minute. Both units are programmable to match user requirements. Each unit is supplied PVC tubing, tube connectors and operating instructions. MODD unit incorporates battery timeclock back up in case of power failure, BODD unit is operated by four D cell batteries (not supplied) and is situated where no mains electricity is available. MODD unit efficiently allows up to two traps to be dosed by one pump. Precise delivery extends activator economy significantly over manual dosing methods. Mounting frame Manufactured in brushed grade 0 stainless steel to match other kitchen appliances. Houses litres of activator. Versatile unit can be floor or wall mounted and has reversible door for right hand or left hand opening. Pre-drilled apertures for mains feed and biological activator feed are supplied with blanking grommets. Lockable door has slot aperture for convenient view of activator level. 7 ACO Marine Pipe Systems Critical to the effective operation of all wastewater systems is the selection of the piping components, the choice of material and correct installation. ACO PIPE stainless steel and ACO GM-X, GM-X-VACplus and GM-X-F galvanized drainage systems comprehensive range of pipe components ensures a simple and cost-effective solution with connections, penetrations and supports for all conceivable situations. The ACO PIPE stainless steel push-fit pipe systems offer a modern alternative to plastic and galvanized pipes. Simple assembly provides greater flexibility in use with considerably lighter installations compared to conventional piped systems, high fire safety and high resistance to corrosion. For vacuum systems the GM-X-VACplus sealing element fills both socket stages, thereby ensuring trouble-free vacuum operation. All pipes and fittings are hot galvanized inside and out. The zinc coating is an average 00g/m or µ, impact-resistant and shock-proof. The zinc coating produces a cathodic protection of the cut edges preventing bottom rust. In addition, the insides of the pipes and fittings are given an alkyd-melamine resin based plastic coating. This internal coating reduces frictional resistance on the internal surfaces and incrustation is largely prevented. The ACO Marine GM-X-F fire system pipes have an operating pressure of bar. Specifications for the installation of fire extinguishing systems on ships are rigorous requiring, high fire protection, low empty weight, low displacement, simple and quick installation The ACO Marine GM-X-F range of pipes and fittings is suitable for, but not limited to, applications such as extinguishing pipes, wash-water systems, cooling water systems, car-deck extinguishing systems, spray systems, foam extinguishing systems and sprinkler systems for the ship building and offshore industries. ACO Gullies and Channels The ACO Marine EG0 range of gullies provide hygienic, economic and simple to install trapped drainage solutions for washrooms, toilets, 'wet' bathrooms, changing rooms, galleys, swimming pools, etc. All floor finishes, including cement and resin screeds, ceramic tiles and flexible vinyl sheet - in solid and suspended flooring applications - are catered for. Manufactured from austenitic AISI 0 grade stainless steel as standard; excellent corrosion resistance is guaranteed. Optional AISI grade stainless steel for aggressive applications is also available.
