5 50 Hertz connects Key fi gures (2010) The European power grid works at a frequency of 50 Hz. This is the frequency at which the electricity system is stable and reliable. The task of a transmission system operator is to keep the frequency at 50 Hz at all times, power generation and consumption are then in perfect balance. This is essential to ensure a maximum of security of supply for all residential and industrial consumers. 50Hertz secures this necessary balance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Staff as of 31 December 643 Sales revenues 5,595.3 million Of which FIT * revenues 3,585.8 million Network revenues million Others ** 1,388.0 million Fixed assets 1,37 million With approximately 650 employees, 50Hertz Transmission ensures the operation, maintenance, planning and extension of the 220 kv and 380 kv transmission system in the German Federal States of Berlin, Brandenburg, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. All outputs from renewable sources are integrated and transported to consumers in the control area of 50Hertz. Special focus is placed on creating the requisite infrastructure. 49,9 50,0 Hz 50,1 Depreciation 69.9 million Consumer Producer * Feed-in tariff for renewables ** Revenues from services to a third party, balancing group management and other revenues
6 Regional centres Legal parameters The company is based in Berlin with the head offi ce in Berlin- Treptow. The System Control function with its centrepiece, the Transmission Control Centre ( TCC ), and the Front Offi ce are situated at the location Berlin Eastside in Neuenhagen near Berlin. It is here that energy fl ow through the networks is monitored and managed to constantly maintain the balance between power generation and consumption. This is how the legal obligation of system operator 50Hertz to guarantee system security is put into practice. Maintenance, repair and development of the transmission system as well as of the 65 substations and switching stations are ensured by 270 employees working in six regional centres. 7 Balancing group management Balancing groups are composed of any number of feeding and delivery points in a given control area, and are managed by so-called balancing group managers. Balancing group management ( BGM ) serves the purpose of organizing energy exchanges between market partners ( balancing group managers ) within the 50Hertz control area and with other control areas, based on the relevant statutory provisions and corresponding contractual agreements ( balancing group agreements ). BGM comprises pricing and publication of prices for compensation energy, determined on the basis of the balancing energy used to balance the energy system across the German control areas. BGM also covers procurement from market partners ( balancing group managers and distribution system operators ) of all data required for the settlement of balancing group agreements, including 50Hertz own balancing group agreements, as well as monthly settlement of balancing group agreements and clearing of the control areas. 50 Hertz into the future The enterprise s aspiration is to keep 50 Hz, the pulse of European power supply, constant, together with our domestic and foreign partners, in order to promote the development of the European electricity market, to integrate renewables into the transmission grid and to upgrade the grid to meet these needs. The 50Hertz experts, in close cooperation with regional partners, guarantee a responsible approach when using assets provided by nature : Nesting aids on overhead line towers, for example for ospreys, falcons and jackdaws Ecologically-minded construction and maintenance of overhead lines Numerous compensatory activities and renaturation schemes Complete acceptance of renewables Network development for climate protection
