2 IMPORTANCE OF WATER Life on planet Earth would be impossible without water. All life forms, from simple bacteria to complex multicellular plants and animals, contain water. Human body is composed of approximately 70 % water (by weight)
3 IMPORTANCE OF WATER we need water for our survival as well as for our convenience: drink it cook with it wash with it travel on it Domestic use use enormous amount of it for agriculture Manufacturing mining energy production waste disposal.

10 SOURCES OF WATER POLLUTION Point-sources Harmful substances are emitted directly into a body of water comes from well defined source Can be treated to a less harmful form Most common point sources: Discharge pipes from industries and WWTPs Discharge from waste disposal sites, mines,animal feedlots
11 SOURCES OF WATER POLLUTION Nonpoint-sources Delivers pollutants indirectly through environmental changes comes from dispersed area caused by rainfall or snowmelt moving over and through the ground. As the runoff moves, it picks up and carries away natural and human-made pollutants, finally depositing them into lakes, rivers, wetlands, coastal waters, and even our underground sources of drinking water The most common NPS pollutants: sediment and nutrients => These wash into water bodies from agricultural land, animal feeding operations, construction sites, and other areas of disturbance.
12 Surface water it is water found in a river, lake or other surface impoundments. not very high in mineral content is exposed to many different contaminants, such as animal wastes, pesticides, insecticides, industrial wastes, algae and many other organic materials. Possibly contains Giardia or Coliform Bacteria from the feces of wild animals and should be boiled or disinfected by some means prior to drinking
13 Ground Water trapped beneath the ground. Because of the many sources of recharge, ground water may contain any or all of the contaminants found in surface water as well as the dissolved minerals it picks up during it s long stay underground. Waters that contains dissolved minerals, such as calcium and magnesium above certain levels are considered hard water. Because water is considered a solvent, over time it can break down the ionic bonds that hold most substances together, it tends to dissolve and gather up small amounts of whatever it comes in contact with. For instance, in areas of the world where rock such as limestone, and magnesite are common, well water is usually very high in mineral content, and therefore considered hard.

16 Indicator organisms (coliforms) Because it is not possible to test water for all potential pathogens, a common practice is to check for indicator organisms, which are present in large numbers in feces. Total coliforms are considered as indicator organisms predict the presence of pathogens absent in uncontaminated water present in higher numbers than pathogens in contaminated water better survival in water than pathogens easy to analyze
17 Subgroups of Total Coliforms Fecal Coliforms Subset of total coliform Resides in the intestinal tract of warm-blooded animals (including humans) Contains pathogens (disease causing e.g., E.coli) and non-pathogenic bacteria Indicates fecal contamination and potential presence of pathogens Escherichia coli (E-Coli) E.coli is a sub-group of fecal coliform group It is naturally found in the intestines of warm-blooded animals, Cows Chicken Pigs Dogs Cats Birds People Enters the environment through feces. best indicator of health risk
18 Oxygen-Demanding Wastes Dissolved oxygen (DO) is one of the most important measures of the quality of a water source. For a healthy fish population minimum recommended DO concentration is 5 mg/l. As DO decrease undesirable odors, taste and colors reduces the acceptability of that water as a domestic supply and reduce its attractiveness for recreational uses. Oxygen demanding materials in domestic sewage come primarily from human waste and food residue Oxygen demanding material: Anything that can be oxidized in the receiving water with the consumption of dissolved molecular oxygen
19 Oxygen-Demanding Wastes As bacteria decompose the organic wastes, they utilize oxygen dissolved in water, which reduces the remaining amount of DO. Usually biodegradable organic matter but also includes certain inorganic compounds (e.g. Fe, Mn)
20 Measurement of Oxygen Demanding Waste To predict the extent of oxygen depletion, it is necessary to know how much waste is being discharged and how much oxygen is required to degrade the waste BIOCHEMICAL OXYGEN DEMAND (BOD): The amount of oxygen required by microorganisms to degrade the waste biologically CHEMICAL OXYGEN DEMAND (COD): The amount of oxygen needed to oxidize the wastes chemically
21 Nutrients Nutrients are the chemicals that are essential to the growth of living things Nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon, sulfur, calcium, potassium, manganese high conc. allow excessive growth of aquatic plants, particularly algae, which eventually die and decompose Decrease in DO taste, odor, color, turbidity Eutrophication

23 Thermal Pollution A number of industries including steam generated electric power plants use water to remove excess heat from their operations. A rise in temperature of a body of water has a number of chemical, physical and biological effects. Since solubility of oxygen in water is an inverse function of temperature, warmer waters have less dissolved oxygen. Heat also accelerates metabolism and bacteria decomposition, which depletes dissolved oxygen further. A temperature difference as small as 5-7C between the heated discharge and the receiving water body may be detrimental to many life forms

25 SALTS Water naturally accumulates a variety of dissolved solids, or salts as it passes through soils and rocks on its way to the sea. The concentration of dissolved solids is an important indicator of the usefulness of water for various applications. Drinking water max. TDS = 500 mg/l Irrigation water 1500 mg/l can be tolerated by most crops Water with 2100 mg/l of TDS is not suitable for irrigation.
