1 Research Compendium Coal Sector in India 2013 A comprehensive data and information update Release Date : August 2013

2 Background About the report Coal is the only major conventional source of energy that is available in abundant quantities in India. It accounts for about 52% of total energy consumption in India. While India has abundant reserves of coal and is one of the largest producers of coal in the world, the bulk of these reservess are of low quality. Recently, a large gap between domestic production and demand has made India one of the largest coal importers in the world. India s dependence on imports of other energy sources such as oil and natural gas further complicates the situation. India plans to increase infrastructure spending to a trillion dollars in the Twelfth Five Year Plan, and a large chunk of this investment is expected to go to the power sector. However, coal availability remains a key concern for power producers in India. The Government of India has taken steps to encourage private investments in coal mining through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) route and by allocating coal blocks for captive consumption. The report titled Coal Sector in India 2013 has been prepared to give the user a complete understanding of the coal industry in India The report analyzes all the important aspects of the industry including present and future, production and imports, industry-wise coal consumption, global and Indian pricing, captive coal mining, legal and regulatory structure, governmental policies, companies operating in the Indian coal industry, their expansion plans and financial details including future projections. This report collates data, information and opinions from various sources government, international organizations and industry bodies. It has been designed to present up to date information and analysis in a clear and easy to use manner. Extensive data in the form of tables, charts and figures has been included to serve as a ready reference for information on the coal industry. Domestic coal prices are well below international prices and the gap needs to be bridged
