8 Fuel cells
9 What is a fuel cell (FC)? It will produce energy in the form of electricity and heat as long as fuel is supplied. In principle, a fuel cell operates like a battery. Unlike a battery, a fuel cell does not run down or require recharging. On the catalyst the hydrogen atom splits into a proton and an electron. A fuel cell consists of two electrodes and an electrolyte.

42 Reforming catalysts The conventional reforming catalysts (Ni-based) Highly active for SR of natural gas Do not tolerate sulfur Strong carbon formation Fresh Ni catalyst Inert SiC Used Ni catalyst The risk for carbon formation increases if the fuel contains C-C bonds The risk for carbon formation is high, especially with ethanol! Methanol (C1-compound) becomes interesting. However, it is very poisoneous! For ATR of liquid fuels, more stable catalysts are needed.
