2 Product Description and Image 2.1 Many current adjustable desk lamps are assembled from numerous parts, including moving ones. These same lamps are often delivered pre-assembled, rather than flat packed. This creates unnecessary harm on the environment throughout production and transportation. It was therefore, the goal of this project to create a flat packable adjustable desk lamp that is made from a reduced number of parts, specifically of the moving variety. The result of this is CORA, a flat packed lamp that is simple in construction and assembly utilising non-destructive and recyclable fixings. The method of adjustability chosen is rotation. Simply slide off the Aluminium Light Output and Cable Holder and rotate the Body (an assembly of two cork legs using a friction fit) of CORA to a position that is satisfactory. Once this has been achieved slide the Aluminium Light Output and Cable Holder back into position. The interaction that arises from the adjustability of the lamp provides an element of fun and playfulness. Cora consists of both biological and technical nutrients throughout the lamp itself, and its packaging. Biological materials have been used to create a natural and warm aesthetic, illustrating its environmental and sustainable design. What infrastructure takes your product from cradle to cradle? The entirety of CORA can be re-utilised. The ease of which something can be returned and the financial incentives encouraging owners to do so ensures CORA is cradle to cradle. This business strategy also ensures that a loyal customer base is built. How does it get cycled? Home repair Replacement bulbs and electrical cables can be ordered online and delivered in prepaid return packaging allowing the broken components to be sent back to the company. Buying refurbished Refurbished or reusable components of CORA will be available for purchase at a discounted cost. These are; - parts - HDPE light diffuser - Company reclamation - Cork Can be remanufactured into a new part. Alternatively, cork can be composted allowing new nutrients to grow. The lamp is switched on and off by a squeeze action. The HDPE diffuser has been designed to be comfortable when squeezed inwards using a thumb. The rear section of the Aluminium Light Output has also been shaped so it is comfortable when squeezed against. 2.3 Please turn over. - Depending on the condition of the aluminium it can be reused, refurbished or remanufactured into a new part. - HDPE light diffuser Depending on the condition of the HDPE it can be cleaned and reused or remanufactured into a new part Reutilisation Cycle and Business Model What happens at the end of the product s useful life? If the owner decides to replace or discard CORA, they have two options; 1. Order prepaid return packaging via the CORA website. The returnee will receive a financial reward for returning all, or part of CORA. 2. Personally, or locally, compost the biological nutrients (Cork, Ecovative Mushroom Material, ) and recycle the technical nutrients (, HDPE, Enviro-wire, Natural Latex Rubber Bands, PurePrint Cardboard, and L.E.D Bulb). - Depending on the condition of the electrical cable it can be cleaned and reused or remanufactured into a new part. - L.E.D Bulb Bulbs will be sent to a specialist treatment and recycling facility. - Ecovative Mushroom Material Will be composted, allowing new nutrients to grow. - Will be composted, allowing new nutrients to grow. - Natural Rubber Bands will be cleaned and reused until they come to the end of their useful life, at which point they will be sold to a natural rubber recycling company.

Material Selection 4.1 Lamp Aluminium (Lighting Output, Cable Holder, and Screws) is recyclable, and in doing so presents a 95% reduction in the amount of energy needed to produce it, compared to primary metal. Aluminium is also lightweight, reducing the cost of transportation. HDPE (Light Diffuser) is tough and has low friction, important characteristics considering the material will be handled and is required to move. HDPE is easy to process, and recyclable. (Electrical Cable) is a recyclable electrical cable and wire that is PVC and halogen free, thus, a vast improvement over non-recyclable alternatives. Cork (Legs) is a natural material that is recyclable whilst also being compostable, lightweight and impermeable to water, important considering the lamp is designed to serve on a desk, a place where drinks are inevitable, presenting the risk of one being spilt. Ecovative Mushroom Material is a fast growing, low water consuming, compostable and rapidly renewable alternative to plastic packaging. The material is naturally fire retardant, lightweight, and shock absorbent, hence why it has been chosen as the primary material in CORA s packaging. is a renewable, recyclable, and compostable material that is lightweight. This material has been chosen for it ability to be printed onto easily. Natural latex rubber is a rapidly renewable, elastic, and recyclable material that possesses excellent resilience and tensile strength. This material has been chosen for its ability to keep CORA s packaging secured together. Colourants An organic pigment will be used to colour the Natural Latex Rubber green. Green has been used to showcase the product as environmental and sustainable, whilst also making the rubber bands for CORA easily identifiable. Green4print Emerald Offset Inks are 75% - 82% bio-ink. The inks are made from bio-solvents and bio-resins (phenol-formaldehyde tin-free resins) with no suspicious substances and halogen-free pigments. Furthermore, the inks are free from volatile and toxic substances, and mineral oil, as well as possessing improved biodegradability, enhanced cyclability and de-inking. The inks will be used to print onto the cardboard section of the packaging and the user manual. A brown colour will be used. 4.2 Material Reutilisation Material reutilisation has been maximised as all CORA units will be manufactured using 100% recycled technical nutrients and only rapidly renewable, virgin biological nutrients. 5 4.3 Material Health Lamp has a NFPA Health score of 1, fine particles can cause irritation. Product registry: insulation is PVC, halogen, heavy metal and phthalate free. The flame retardant insulation gives off no corrosive gases when exposed to fire or flame. Product registry: Cork has no hazards as sold. However, generation of cork dust can cause nasal dryness, irritation and obstruction. HDPE has a NFPA health score of 1, fine particles can cause irritation. Ecovative Mushroom Material is naturally fire retardant. The material can be dusty when dry. This dust may irritate airways if directly inhaled. The material is Banned List compliant. It is fully optimised does not contain any GREY or x-assessed chemicals, and process chemicals have been identified and none are GREY or x-assessed. This includes no exposure from carcinogens, mutagens, or reproductive toxicants. Furthermore, the material meets VOC emissions testing requirements and a Material Health optimisation strategy is not required. As sold cardboard shouldn t present any other hazard, although, the generation of cardboard dust may aggravate preexisting eye, skin, or respiratory conditions. Colourants Organic powdered pigments commonly have a NFPA Health score of 1 as there is a slight risk of fire. Over exposure to dust from powdered pigment may cause eye, skin, and airways irritation. This includes no exposure from carcinogens, mutagens or reproductive toxicants. Furthermore, VOC emissions testing and Material Health optimisation strategy are not required. Every material has been chosen for its ability to be recycled, composted, and/or is rapidly renewable, without a compromise on the products structural, functional or aesthetic properties. Furthermore, Alcoa aluminium, Enviro- Wire,, Ecovative Mushroom Material, and Green4Print Inks have been chosen specifically because they re cradle to cradle certified, creating positive change both environmentally and socially. Supporting producers of such materials increases awareness, and should be an inspiration to producers of materials that do not comply to such standards. Only non-destructive, recyclable fixings have been used - friction fits and aluminium screws. An electronic product was designed to raise awareness of the monumental amounts of e-waste that currently exists, and continues to be produced placing great harm on the environment and humanity.
