Biosolids to Energy- Stamford, CT Jeanette A. Brown, PE, DEE, D.WRE Alternative Management Options for Municipal Sewage Biosolids Workshop, Burlington, ON June 17, 2010

Contents Background Project Development and Research Process Alternatives Status

Convert dried, pelletized wastewater residuals to a gas that can be used to generate electricity. Wastewater residuals (sludge, biosolids) are a renewable energy source with a relatively high BTU value (7000 to 9000 BTU/lb). Project Concept

Background Project was conceived because Stamford has an extremely high cost for energy ($0.18 per kw/hr) Stamford is in an electrical congestion zone There is a need for renewable energy sources Wastewater residuals have a high energy content

Background Elicited support from the Mayor Acquisition of funds 2006-$1.5 million from DOE 2007-$1.5 million from DOE 2009-$1.9 million from DOE All matching grants

Focused on gasification Technology Review Conduct a literature Program Identify entities currently in the field of biomass thermal conversion and other entities. Technology Assessment Sorting information on past practices, current operations, and ongoing research. Assessment of gasification technologies.

Program Evaluation of Technology Nature of biomass used Length of operation Quality of operation Operating conditions and reliability Interest of technology manufacturer Solids Characteristics Proximate and ultimate analysis Heating value, Ash fusion characteristics, and Metals.

Program On-site Pilot Scale Testing Vendor Bench Scale Testing Site visits Vendor Testing Air Emissions/Residuals Impact Assessment

What is Gasification? A process which converts carboncontaining fuels into gas- referred to as producer gas, synthesis gas or syngas. Coal was gasified in the 1800 s to produce town gas, Gasification has now been brought up to modern standards for reliability, emissions, automation and safety using today's technology

Basics of Gasification Gasification is a thermo-chemical reaction with the following distinct stages: Drying Pyrolysis (thermal decomposition) Char combustion Ash removal Different gasification technologies result in different levels particulate matter and tar in the syngas stream This will affect the final application and emissions treatment

Basics of Gasification Different gasification technologies suit varying scales Downdraft suits small scale systems (e.g. domestic use) Updraft suits medium scale systems (e.g. institutional, industrial etc.) Fluidised bed suits large scale systems (e.g. large power generation)

What is Syngas? Syngas is a low energy gas Natural gas has a lower heating value of ~1000 Btu/scf Syngas typically has a lower heating value of Btu/scf Typical constituents of Syngas produced from biomass gasification Water vapor (from moisture content of the fuel) Hydrogen Carbon Monoxide Methane Nitrogen

Added Benefit-Carbon Footprint Reduction No greenhouse gas emissions from gasification unlike incineration CO is used in the generation of electricity and therefore not emitted from the process. Reduce carbon pollutants in the transport and disposal (typically incineration) of sludge CO 2

Pilot Scale and Full Scale Testing Designed and built pilot scale test unit Stamfordbiogas.org Sent dried biosolids to four different full scale test facilities North Dakota-downdraft Oklahoma-updraft Germany-fluidized bed British Columbia-updraft

Process Selection and Development

Nexterra Gasifier Fuel Source Pelletized biosolids Wood biomass Phased approach Selected Process Phase 1-thermal energy to dry the biosolids Phase 2-Biosolids to electrical energy

Phase 1-supply thermal energy

Phase 2-Biosolids to Energy

Project Status Third party-independent review Determine project to be technically feasible Determine Phase 1 to have a cost associated with it depending on natural gas costs Determined Phase 2 to save money over the long run Need funding

Project Importance Project is critical Regulations are changing which might negatively impact land application Need renewable energy sources and we are wasting a great resource Need to demonstrate to the wastewater community the benefits of gasification
