Science Kindergarten Created: 06/13 1 st Six Weeks August 26 October 4 Unit 1:Living/Non-living Unit 2:Leaves Magnets 2 nd Six Weeks October 7 November 8 3 rd Six Weeks November 11 December 20 Sky Comparisons Unit 1: Living/Non-living K.9A Differentiate between living and non-living things based upon whether they have basic needs and produce off-spring. K.9B Examine evidence that living organisms have basic needs such as food, water, and shelter for animals and air, water, nutrients, sunlight, and space for plants. K.6B Explore interactions between magnets and various materials K.8C Observe, describe, and illustrate objects in the sky such as the clouds, moon, and stars, including the sun.

Watch Brainpop on living and non-living Go on a living/non-living walk outside and discuss as you walk the diffefences Create pposter in large group using magazines (have children work as a group to cut living and non-living pictures out of the magazines and sort them). Present posters to the class. Unit 2: Leaves K.2A Ask questions about organisms, objects, and events Watch ABC s of Magnets or A First Look at Magnets on discovery education. Discuss attributes of magnets and why they won t attract everything. Allow children to walk around the room with magnets to discover what will attract and what will not. Complete one of the two worksheets to go with the experiment. Discuss the differences between the night sky and the sky during the day. On a double sided paper create a day sky and night time sky. Be sure to have sun and clouds for day and constellation and moon for night. observed in the natural world. K.2B Plan and conduct simple descriptive investigations such as ways objects move K.3B Make predictions based on observable patterns in nature such as the shapes of leaves.

K.10A Sort plants and animals into groups based on physical characteristics such as color, size, body covering, or leaf shape. Read Going on a Leaf Hunt or any other book that discusses leaves. Have a leaf walk outside and have children collect leaves. Back inside discuss the different attributes of the leaves and have them pick one to complete their Describe My Leaf activity. *Oral discussion *Oral discussion *Oral discussion

Unit 1: Have a speaker come to talk to the children about what conservation means. Complete conservation posters to turn for competition. Unit 1: K.3C Explore that scientists investigate different things in the natural world and use tools to help in their investigations. Watch Magic School Bus about Archaeologists and Artifacts. Discuss types of tools archaeologists use Simulate a dig using a chocolate chip cookie and a toothpick Unit 1: K.3A Identify and explain a problem such as the impact of littering on the playground and propose a solution in his/her own words. Earth day Flipchart on Promethean board Create Earth Man and write I can help the Earth by

Unit 2: K.7A Observe, describe, compare, and sort rocks by size, shape, color, and texture. K.7B Observe and describe physical properties of natural sources of water, including color and clarity. K.7C Give examples of ways rocks, soil, and water are useful. Unit 2: K.5B Observe, record, and discuss how materials can be changed by heating or cooling. K.6A Use the five senses to explore different forms of energy such as light, heat, and sound. Unit 2: Finding Common Denominators to Add, Subtract, and Compare Fractions Dividing a Decimal Number by a Whole Number Including a Power of Ten Dividing by a Decimal Number Multiplying Mixed Numbers K.10 B Identify parts of plants such as roots, stem, and leaves and parts of animals such as head, eyes, and limbs. K.10C Identify ways that young plants resemble the parent plant. K.10D Observe changes that are part of a simple life cycle of a plant: seed, seedling, plant, flower, and fruit. Take a rock walk (explore the soil outside and take samples; as well as find a rock to describe later) Complete either Rock Definitions or Rock Report/Exploring Soil Discuss the stages of the water cycle (use Brain Pop video or water cycle flipchart for lesson). Complete the water vapor experiment Complete Water in Three Forms worksheet. Lima Bean Experiment: Plant lima bean in plastic baggie and chart it s growth 3D plant diagram: After discussing the parts of a flower create flower diagram using q-tips for roots, straw for stem, cupcake liner for petals, sunflower seeds for the seeds and draw leaves.

On going Scientific Investigation and Reasoning K1.A identify and demonstrate safe practices as described in the Texas Safety Standars during classroom and outdoor investigations, including wearing safety goggles washing hands, and using materials appropriately; K2.B discuss the importance of safe practices to keep self and others safe and healthy K2.C collect data and make overservations using simple equipment such as hand lenses, primary balances and non-standard measurement tools K2.D record and organize data and observations using pictures, numbers, and words K2.E communicate observations with others about simple descriptive investigations K4.A collect information using tools, including computers, hand lenses, primary balances, cups, bowls, magnets, collecting nets, and notebooks; timing devices, including clocks and timers; non-standard measuring items such s paper clips and clothespins; weather instruments such as demonstration thermometers and wind socks; and materials to support observations of habitats of organisms such as terrariums and aquariums; and K4.B use senses as a tool of observation to identify properties and patterns of organisms, objects, and events in the environments. K5.A observe and record properties of objects, including relative size and mass, such as bigger or smaller and heavier or lighter, shape, color, and texture K6.C observe and describe the location of an object in relation to another such as above, below, behind, in front of, and beside; and

K6.D observe and describe the ways that objects can move such as in a straight line, zigzag, up and down, back and forth, round and round, and fast and slow. K8.A observe and describe weather changes from day to day an over seasons K8.B identify events that have repeating patterns, including seasons of the year and day and night
