MISTRALS Mediterranean Integrated STudies at Regional And Local Scales WORKSHOP OVERVIEW MISTRALS, INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP MALTA 30 MARCH-1 ST APRIL /12/2010
Contents 1- Scientific and geopolitical objectives of this workshop Program Partners Previous event /12/2010
1- Scientific and geopolitical objectives of this workshop Placed under the sign of excellence, this lobbying conference is part of the internationalization of the interdisciplinary program MISTRALS (Mediterranean Integrated STudies at Regional And Local Scales, MISTRALS is a decennial program for systematic observation and research dedicated to the understanding of the Mediterranean basin environmental process under the global change pressure. It aims to anticipate the behavior of this system over a century, from an interdisciplinary analysis conducted over the decade. The underlined ultimate goal of this program is to predict the evolution of the habitable conditions of this large eco-area. The carried analyses carried will directly address resources and environment public policies to anticipate the evolution of societies and propose adaptative measures and mitigation policies that would optimize them. Indeed, the inherent Mediterranean vulnerability towards climatic and anthropogenic changes, linked to its economic and demographic development, threatens its future habitability, with particularly high risks to its biodiversity and resources access. Given these issues, MISTRALS has been established since 2008 on national and international collaborations involving European and Mediterranean countries, on topics that will contribute or enhance the environmental guidelines such as those stipulated by the Barcelona Convention. We would like now to invite both other European and Circum-Mediterranean organizations to share with us their science objectives and societal needs, in order to identify jointly the priority topics to be addressed. In this scope, we have scheduled the International MISTRALS Workshop to be held at La Valetta, Malta, 30 March to 1 st April This symposium will be organized around main MISTRALS studied topics and their associated crosscutting issues, in order to: Show this initiative and its progress Submit projects and additional proposals for a long term perspective Build strategies, tools and analyses adapted to Mediterranean issues Co-construct an international partnership 3 15/12/2010
2- Program This workshop will be organized over 3 days, around: Sessions presenting MISTRALS main topics and their state of the art, as well as the guest initiative HOMERE dedicated to Human and Social Sciences; Keynotes speeches on Mediterranean stakes; Prospectives workshops Special session dedicated to funders, stakeholders and managers putatively involved in the sustainable development of the Mediterranean. Sessions presenting MISTRALS and HOMERE topics and state of the art: HyMeX (Hydrological cycle in the Mediterranean experiment) aims to improve our understanding of running-water cycle, particularly focussed on evolution and predictability of extreme events in the perspective of climate change. MERMeX (Marine Mediterranean experiment) is focused on the biogeochemical changes that will take place in the Mediterranean Sea due to natural changes as well as the socio-economic impacts, and how they will affect marine ecosystems and biodiversity. ChArMeX (Chemistry-Aerosol Mediterranean experiment) aims to evaluate current situation of the Mediterranean basin atmospheric environment and to anticipate its future development and its impact on regional climate, air quality, marine and continental biogeochemistry. SICMED (Surfaces et Interfaces Continentales Méditerranéennes) is dedicated to the study of ecoanthroposystems of rural and peri-urban areas under present and future climate and man-induced pressures; the impact of climate variability on hydrological and biogeochemical cycles, as well as the social, economic and biotechnological mechanisms associated to these cycles, in order to optimize the management of these systems. TERMeX (Terra Mediterranean experiment) aims to better understand, in the Mediterranean context, interactions between dynamic processes of the lithosphere, on a short time scale (~ years for earthquakes or volcanic eruptions) and on a long time period (~ years for constrains accumulation and resources concentration). PaleoMeX (Paleo Mediterranean experiment) is dedicated to the study of climate change in the Mediterranean area during the Holocene, ie the last years. Overall, this program proposes to understand the interactions between climate, societies and civilizations of the Mediterranean world during this period of time. BioDivMex (BioDiversity of the Mediterranean experiment) is committed to monitor the specific biodiversity of the Mediterranean area, its vulnerability to anthropogenic and climate pressures, which have multiple and often adverse impacts on the specific Mediterranean habitats and ultimately on the diversity of animal, plant and microbial biosystems. Homere was started as a crosscutting initiative between INSU, INSHS, Human and Society Sciences Institute and INEE, Ecology and Environment Institute) and in partnership with other research organizations. It aims to develop more interdisciplinary researches and to address directly the societal issues related to global climate changes in the Mediterranean Basin. 4 15/12/2010
Keynotes speeches sessions, will involve 3 to 4 speakers Livability of the region in the next century Living in the mediterranean cities, from BCE towards 2100 Ressources management, from survey to sharing Land management, optimization Climates and paleo-environment Natural risks in the Mediterranean Workshops, organized by 20/30 people groups Information and communication systems Integrated modeling of the mediterranean basin Extreme climatic event/perception/hazards Landscape approach, paleo-environment Observation systems Living resources: agriculture, fishery, farming / food security Exploitable natural resources: prospection and exploitation / appraising the impact of the exploitation on their cycle Air quality Territories Culture and societies Training and formation Water resources and sustainability 3- Partners This workshop will gather 200 selected people. This is an event of presentation, networking and internalization of MISTRALS towards project leaders and stakeholders interested by the Mediterranean issue. Moreover, this conference will see the integration of objectives and means of EuroMed and MISTRALS. Will be present (not exhaustive): French research organisms and universities such as INSU, INSHS, INEE, university of Aix en Provence, Avignon, Nice-Sophia-Antipolis, Perpignan, the Côte d Azur Observatory, the Banyuls Oceanographic Observatory, the Villefranche Oceanographic Observatory, Ademe, BRGM, CEA, Cemagref, CIRAD, CNES, IFP, IRD, Ifremer, INRA, IRSN, Météo-France; International organizations of the Mediterranean area : Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, CIESM, ICSU, Union for the Mediterranean, Group for Inter-Academic Development ; Mediterranean country organization, such as the Sciences Egyptian Academy, TUBITAK, Malta University, etc. 4- Previous event This workshop is the following of the previous event for MISTRALS launching, held the 3-5 November 2008 at Aix en Provence, France. Supported by INSU, this workshop gathered 130 scientists and high representatives, from universities (Montpellier, Avignon, Mans, Paris 6, etc), CNRS, INRA and organization such as IFP, MEEDAT, Météo-France, CNES, MMSH, CIESM, Blue Plan (not exhaustive). 5 15/12/2010
