AUTOMATIC SLURRY HANDLING 25
AUTOMATIC SLURRY HANDLING Acid in slurry why and how? 26
WHY ACID IN SLURRY? We loose too much ammonia to the atmosphere Ammonia (NH3) evaporating from Stable Slurry storage Field We need ammonia in the slurry! With sulfuric acid we convert NH3 to NH4+ which is a nitrogen (N) form that stays in the slurry instead of evaporating
CONVERTING NH3 TO NH4+ Chemical balance NH3 (ammonia) NH4+ (ammonium) Lowering ph in slurry displaces the balance towards NH4+ ph around 6 70 % reduction ammonia evaporation!
CONVERTING NH3 TO NH4+ Reducing the ph will give: Less ammonia emissions from stable, storage and field: Good for nature, animals and employees More available N in slurry for the plants: Good for the farmer
Slurry is treated with sulfuric acid every day in a process tank outside the stable PROCESS
PROCESS Housing Computer Slurry storage Tech well Process tank Acid 31
PROCESS VIDEO 32
AUTOMATIC SLURRY HANDLING Fully automatic slurry system continuous monitoring documentation of the operation PC-controlled Connected to Internet All data is logged
ENVIRONMENTAL VALUE We stop the evaporation of NH3 at the source Less ammonia in stable air Employee and animal health Less ammonia to the atmosphere Benefits sensitive nature Labor saving Acidified slurry can easily be pumped to storage
CONVERTING NH3 TO NH4+ Advantages of acidified slurry Less ammonia in stable air and less evaporation from stable Improvement of fertilizer value Not necessary to take out slurry manually 35
ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY Acidified slurry Acid is only used to change the chemical balance of NH3 and NH4+ No harm to concrete Use 4-8,5 kg sulfuric acid pr. m3 slurry Acid is stored in a secured tank and only handled by trained people The system is officially tested and documented by VERA 36
ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY Acidification of slurry reduces the gas outlet with kg CO2 equivalents per t/slurry 1% of treated slurry = reduction of t CO2 equivalents 3,3 % or 1 mio. t slurry is treated with acid in Denmark Reduces emissions with t CO2 equivalents Acidification reduces N emissions of about 700 t/day in Denmark
SUM UP Advantages of acidified slurry Less ammonia in stable air and evaporation from stable Improvement of fertilizer value Acidified slurry can be pumped automatically to storage tanks 38
