4 Research-Academic Center Sustainability of geotechnical systems: processes, phenomena, risks Fundamental basis of the project is a mandatory requirement for its successfullness and lies in a forming research work and basic scientific knowledge for functioning physical and nature-balanced systems with geological and technical components (GTC) from micro- to macrolevels. Adopting the equilibrium principle is a main keypoint for the education component of the project. Prerequisites for initiation: Awarding of a grant with participation of the experts from the Ukraine and USA Sources of financing: CRDF 300,000 USD Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine eq. to 150,000 USD NMU eq. to 150,000 USD Project Duration: June 1, May Board of Directors (Top Managers): Director, Deputy Directors on Research, Academic Work, International Affairs and Transferring Technologies, Coordinator Scientific Council of the Research and Academic Center Subdivision for scienceand-technology creative work of youth Research Center of Sustainability of Geotechnical Systems (3 modern research labs) Technical equipping of the Research and Academic Center is fulfilled through formation of three modern laboratories as a base for experimental research of the Research Center of Sustainability of Geotechnical Systems: - Laboratory of geophysics, mathematical modelling and GIS-technologies; - Laboratory of physical chemistry for geotechnical systems; - Laboratory of geomechanics for geotechnical systems. 3

12 CONCLUSIONS The new strategy of development offered by European Union is the orientation and call for the former Soviet Union countries. We need to take the European Union experience and to accelerate motion to the economy of knowledge. Higher education and science in Ukraine is able to answer on the calls of XXI age. The important element of such policy is restructuring the society, based on knowledge and modern technologies. Reforms and realization of innovative development of country in modern terms is providing by cooperation of education, science and hi-tech production. 11
