NWRI has achieved an outreach milestone of gaining over 1,000 followers on Twitter! We are grateful and pleased to be able to provide our followers with water and wastewater industry news pertaining to research and outreach, including news items from our NWRI Member Agencies and Corporate Associates. Follow NWRI on Twitter at You can also follow NWRI on Facebook at NWRI "Water From Water" Video Series Now on YouTube NWRI is pleased to announce that our outreach video series, "Water From Water," is now available on YouTube at The "Water From Water" video series was developed by NWRI to enable the general public, decision makers, and water industry professionals to gain a broader understanding of issues in water science and technology. The videos include: Program 1 - Desalination & Recycling: New Century, New Sources (1993) The only way to find more water is to make "water from water" -- to purify the water we already have. (16.5 minutes) Program 2 - Recycling (1995) Recycling water has been used for years in agriculture, industry, and cities for business and residential use. What remains a challenge to recycling is the most difficult to overcome -- not technology nor experience, but the public's perception of using water that has already been used. (19 minutes) Programs 3&4 - Clean Water: What's It Worth? (1996) This video looks at the impact of the Clean Water Act 30 years after it was implemented. (30 minutes) Program 5 - Veins of Mother Earth: A Native American Perspective on Water (1999)
2 This documentary explores both the spiritual and historical importance of water to various Native American tribes across the United States. (30 minutes) Program 6 - The Value of Water (2005) This video brings together economists, water experts, and Native Americans to explore one of the most basic, yet controversial, questions in the water industry: what is the value of water? (22 minutes) Comments Welcome for USBR Colorado River Basin Water Supply & Demand Study Final Reports The U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) is encouraging comments on the Final Reports of the Colorado River Basin Water Supply & Demand Study, which are available online as preproduction copies. The purpose of the Study was to define current and future imbalances in water supply and demand in the Colorado River Basin and adjacent areas of the Basin States that receive Colorado River water over the next 50 years, and to develop and analyze adaptation and mitigation strategies to resolve those imbalances. Over 150 options and strategies to resolve supply and demand imbalances were received and divided into four groups for consideration during this Study, including those that: Increase Basin water supply. Reduce Basin water demand. Focus primarily on modifying operations. Focus primarily on Basin governance and mechanisms to facilitate option implementation. For instance, among those options listed in Increase Supply were desalination, reuse, and importation, while Reduce Demand included conservation and energy water use efficiency. The Study concluded that addressing these imbalances requires a portfolio approach that applies a wide variety of ideas at the local, state, regional, and basin-wide levels. Specifically, targeted investments in conservation, reuse, and augmentation projects can improve the reliability and sustainability of the Colorado River system to meet current and future water needs. Project participants and stakeholders are welcome to provide written comments on the information provided in the reports. Comments should be submitted by March 14, The comments will be summarized and posted online, and will be considered in future planning activities in the Basin. The reports, which document the Study s progress through January 31, 2011, include the following: Executive Summary. Study Report. Technical Report A Scenario Development. Technical Report B Water Supply Assessment. Technical Report C Water Demand Assessment. Technical Report D System Reliability Metrics. Technical Report E Approach to Develop Options and Strategies. Technical Report F Development of Options and Strategies. Technical Report G System Reliability Analysis and Evaluation of Options and Strategies. The reports and comment submission guidelines can be accessed at
3 DWR Seeking Comments on Draft 2013 Water Desalination Proposal Solicitation Package The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) has released a public review draft of the 2013 Water Desalination Proposal Solicitation Package (PSP) for proposals for grant funding to support brackish water and seawater desalination as a water supply or quality option. When finalized, this PSP will assist potential applicants in preparing and submitting a grant application. Projects should directly support local water resources and indirectly provide water supply benefits to the State. The types of water desalination projects to be funded include: Brackish and Seawater Desalination Construction Projects Pilot and Demonstration Projects Feasibility Study Projects Research Projects The total amount of funding for this round of Water Desalination Grants is $4.5 million. The public and interested applicants are asked to review the draft PSP and provide comments to DWR by 5 pm on February 8, The draft PSP and comment guidelines are available on DWR s desalination website at In addition, two public meetings will be held to discuss the draft PSP and grant application requirements. The first will be held at the Inland Empire Utilities Agency in Chino, California, on January 24, 2013, and the second will be held at DWR in Sacramento, California, on January 30, For questions, please contact DesalPSP@water.ca.gov or phone Michael Ross at or Rich Mills at Early Registration Extended to January 11 for MSSC Annual Salinity Summit The 2013 Multi-State Salinity Coalition (MSSC) Annual Salinity Summit will be held on February 14-15, 2013, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The theme of the summit is Embracing Innovations & Overcoming Barriers as related to desalination and salinity management The early registration rate has been extended to Friday, January 11, The early registration rate is $350 per person. After January 11, the registration rate will be $395 per person. Register online at Keynote speakers will include: Michael Gabaldon, Director of Technical Resources at the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation. Jorge Arroyo, Director of Innovative Water Technologies at the Texas Water Development Board. Richard Nagel, General Manager of West Basin Municipal Water District. Jeff Mosher, Executive Director of NWRI and Administrative Director of the Southern California Salinity Coalition, will be a speaker at the summit, presenting on Salinity Management Accomplishments in Southern California.
