2 Introduction Renewable energy is a fundamental and growing part of the world's ongoing energy transformation. Governments all over the world are joining that consensus. The use of renewables is their prime choice for enhancing access to an affordable, reliable and cleaner sources of modern energy services. Recent studies by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) show clearly that renewables are competitive, attractive to investors and creating millions of new jobs. They present a compelling business case. 150 Countries have enacted policies to catalyze investments in renewable energy technologies. 170 Countries have established Renewable energy target. Many are looking to partner with an increasingly active private sector.

3 Does renewable have a place in today s world energy needs? According to nearly every measure, renewable energy is gaining ground. 1in 5 of energy delivered to consumers comes from renewable sources. Since 2012, new generating capacity fueled by renewables has exceeded that fueled by nonrenewables by a widening margin. 154 gigawatts (GW), capacity from renewables represented 61% of all new power generating capacity added worldwide in Renewables are now the first-choice option for expanding, upgrading and modernizing power systems around the world. Wind and solar power, which commanded about 90% of Investments in renewable power, are now competitive with conventional sources of electricity, as their costs have plunged in recent years.

5 Why is doubling the share of renewables important? +1% Doubling the share of renewables could raise global GDP in 2030 by more than a percentage point over the baseline projection, or United States dollar (USD) 1.3 trillion in 2015 dollars $4.2 trillion annually in avoided expenditures related to climate change and air pollution. 12Gt of CO2 cumulative savings of energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions could reach 12 gigatonnes.

6 Accelerating the energy transformation through policy Policies and regulations remain crucial to advance market development. As the renewable energy sector matures and expands, policies must be adapted regularly to suit changing market conditions. Significant recent policy trends have been the gradual shift in the power sector from tariff -based mechanisms to auctions, and the increasing need for additional flexibility measures into the power system.

7 Renewable power increasingly comes from distributed sources. As deployment of solar PV surges, distributed generation present challenges and opportunities. To capitalize on the opportunities, adjustments are required in power market; Design System regulations Operating procedures. Some of these relate to physical infrastructure, and others are demanded by market design regulation. Some draw on supply resources, while others draw on demand- side resources. Some integrate the two. Some solutions are more long term, while others are more or less stop-gap measures.

8 Modern, renewable-based energy services for all Given the likely pace of grid-extension efforts, nearly 60% of the additional power generation needed to achieve universal electricity access by 2030 will come from off-grid solutions.
