Engineers Without Borders-USA Our Vision Is a world in which all communities have the capacity to meet their basic human needs. Our Mission Engineers Without Borders USA supports community-driven development programs worldwide through the design and implementation of sustainable engineering projects, while fostering responsible leadership.

EWB-USA Projects Water Supply Water Treatment Construction Sanitation Energy Projects Agricultural Bridge/Road

San Diego Professional Chapter Composed of San Diego area professionals Started September, active volunteers Projects in India, El Salvador, and Senegal Work together with the UCSD and SDSU student chapters

EWB-USA SD Projects La Chiripa, El Salvador Rainwater catchment and filtration systems Tanda Mboudaye, Senegal Sanitation Chakicherla, India Reverse Osmosis water filtration and distribution system Solar Powered RO water Plant

La Chiripa, El Salvador Challenges to the community Unclean/remote water source Health concerns Project Clean water from utility or rainwater harvesting New water tanks and biosand filters Successful implementation trip in May

Tanda Mboudaye, Senegal Challenges to the Community Water and sanitation Half of the village is presently lacking a latrine Project Repair existing latrines Construct new latrines

Project Overview Chakicherla Pedda Patapu Palem, Andhra Pradesh, India (CPPP) 4000 residents - Mostly fishermen and day laborers Drinking water contaminated with bacteria and seawater Women and children walk 45 minutes roundtrip each day to fetch water

Where is CPPP?

Introduction - Community and Program History Chapter s Oldest Program EWB has made 9 site visits: 2006 Implemented pipeline project 2008 Partnered w/ NGO ASSIST, installed hand pumps, began researching water treatment 2009 Site assessment, water treatment 2011 Implemented RO water treatment 2012 Monitoring trip 2013 Site assessment, power system

Local Partner ASSIST Regional non-profit Based 45 minutes from CPPP Good relationships with regional government Lots of local experience

Sustainability Our Guiding Principle Triple Bottom Line : Environmental, Social, and Economic Sustainability

Water Plant 2000 L/hr Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment Plant, installed 2011 ~1300 people daily Raw water is pumped from borewell and through a 0.5 km pipeline to plant Community residents pay 150 Rupees for a 30-punch card. Each card is worth 20 liters of water. Revenues pay for plant maintenance and salaries of 3 fulltime plant operators Water Board composed of Community Elders manages plant.

Summary of Problem with Electrical System RO plant is functioning well when power is available ~300 families purchase water each day Daily power cuts!! Community must wait for water!! Need more electric power!!

Design Criteria System Goals and Constraints: Grid is available Maximize pump runtime Minimize energy costs Net-metering not permitted Power panel upgrade

Design Criteria Power Loads at Plant: Power Adjustments 5.7kW running load, 15kW surge (largest load + ancillary) Equipment turned on sequentially, not simultaneously.

Chosen Solution Solar Photovoltaic System with Batteries The System 5.4 kw PV array Array support structure attached to the roof 400 Ah, 144 V battery bank (58 kwh) 6 kw output PCU, 15kW surge Wiring and balance of system components Other Upgrades Load center Ground equipment

Design Criteria PV System Roof size 24 kwh/day generated Average insolation ~5.5 kwh/m 2 /day Structure is anchored into concrete roof with concrete block ~3500 Lb max uplift & downward force in rear columns

Implementation Trip Installation and Commissioning 1. Engage with village elders and water board 2. All stakeholder meeting including Liberty Water Solutions (LWS), SELCO (Solar PV Installer), and Local electrician. 3. Install PV system 4. Test the PV system with and without grid power 5. Train the operators on alarms from the PCU and corrective action procedure. 6. Hand off the equipment ownership to the Water board and village elders.

Sustainability Social, Environmental, and Economic Social Sustainability Support for solar highest of all alternatives in community surveys ASSIST has performed community education about solar system Community successfully petitioned government for installation of new transformer, community electrician will be involved in wiring up PV system Solar PV commonplace in cities, desired and accepted in rural areas Environmental Sustainability Solar resource is plentiful and emissions free Space constraints irrelevant with rooftop mounting Economic Sustainability Pay-as-you-go system: Villagers contribute 3.33 Rupees (~$0.05) for 20 liters At this price, all maintenance costs of plant and operator salaries are paid, and there is more demand than supply Water Board may elect to raise price of water to where supply and demand curves meet, this is their decision to make PV system will reduce power bill and enable more water to be produced, increasing plant s financial efficiency from both revenue and expenditures sides of the equation

Energy Demand Calculations Assume 8 hrs of operation per day and 16,000 L/day 5.7 kw x 8 hrs = 33 kwh max/day 80% max depth of discharge = 57 kwh minimum storage
