Today, one-fourth of internationally traded natural gas is already LNG, and the trend is upward. In part, this is due to increased gas consumption worldwide. But it is also because there are often no other alternatives to LNG. To make LNG even more attractive, improvements in reliability, efficiency, and environmental impact of the entire LNG process chain are required to allow cost-effective use of existing natural gas deposits. As a leading technology supplier, Siemens is at the forefront of this development. Especially in the area of natural gas liquefaction, we see considerable room for improvement in overall efficiency. Our solutions are E-LNG, F-LNG and modular concepts for midsized LNG facilities. 2 More efficiency fewer emissions: E-LNG For fields with low to modest CO 2 content, All-Electric LNG plants powered by Siemens stand out as an economical and ecological approach despite the fact that the majority of today s refrigeration compressors in LNG liquefaction trains are driven by gas turbines. The electric drives higher availability quickly compensates for the higher initial investment in the required thermal power plant. Depending on the LNG market price, the period of amortization can be shorter than five years. With variable-speed electric motors available for all relevant refrigerant compressors, the concept of all-electric liquefaction of natural gas ( E-LNG) can be applied equally well to all LNG liquefaction cycles on the market today, offering a host of benefits. The E-LNG concept has been made feasible by Siemens distinctive know-how in large motors and drives, which are available to match the top end of the refrigerantcompression duties now demanded by the scale-up of LNG train capacities. With respect to sustainability, overall thermal efficiencies have to be considered. Our E-LNG solutions remarkable environmental performance is based on our improved energy efficiency and reduced-emissions combined-cycle power plants. Our electric drives achieve 96 percent energy efficiency (including distribution losses), resulting in an overall refrigeration-system efficiency of up to 45 percent, compared to approximately 32 percent for traditional mechanical drive solutions. In addition, our combinedcycle power plants reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by some 30 percent compared to traditional mechanical compressor drives in combined heat and power applications. That s what Siemens calls an environment-friendly, sustainable solution. 3 Built-in availability: All-Electric LNG The higher availability of an E-LNG plant powered by Siemens is the result of a number of beneficial factors. In the first place, the plant s design concept minimizes downtimes by utilizing maintenance-free equipment such as our variable-speed drive systems (VSDS). The systems include simple, robust and lowstressed, brushless synchronous motors renowned in many industries for their high reliability and availability in the most demanding applications. Allowing for a customized and optimized compressor string design, Siemens offers electricdrive solutions for E-LNG plants in power ratings of up to 90 MW and speeds exceeding 3,600 rpm. The second approach is to increase operational safety, flexibility and asset utili zation. With E-LNG, process and com pression-plant size is no longer restricted by available mechanical drives; there is no need for fired equipment and related scheduled maintenance inside the process plant. Quick and controlled starting and re-starting of pressurized compressors minimizes downtimes and eliminates flaring of expensive refrigerant gas, while compressor speeds can be optimized, and target production can be reached with smaller train capacity, unaffected by ambient temperature. What is more, procuring a comprehensive power-to-compression solution from a single point of responsibility offers a host of benefits for end-customers and EPCs alike. As a result, your plant is earning money much earlier, and independent assessments have shown our sophisticated design concepts may result in 10 to 15 extra production days per year, when compared to mechanically driven solutions. 4 E-LNG: a successful combination of power generation, T&D and electrical drives E-LNG plants powered by Siemens consist of the most reliable components for compressors and drive strings found in the market today. However, power plant availability is crucial for any E-LNG concept. And that is exactly why we are the right partner for your E-LNG project, says Emanuele Calabro, project manager with Siemens Energy Oil & Gas, and adds: When it comes to operating plants under island-type conditions without the possibility to export or import electricity, Siemens expertise and decades of ex perience as a leading OEM supplier of turnkey power plants worldwide makes all the difference. Although Siemens delivers simple-cycle power plants as well, Emanuele Calabro recommends combined-cycle power schemes for their superior performance in terms of efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. They consist of gas turbines, waste-heat recovery boilers and steam turbines to make maximum use of the feed gas. Efficient and environmentally sound power generation is but the basis for an E-LNG success. To cope with the large amounts of electric power required by the refrigeration-compressor drivers and short-circuit currents in the electrical system, E-LNG plants call for state-ofthe-art high-voltage transmission systems with an excellent service of over 30 years. Or, as Emanuele Calabro puts it: For maximum reliability and complete freedom of maintenance, we use fully encapsulated gas-insulated switchgears (GIS) in voltage ratings of typically 132 or 230 kv. The high-voltage power transmission and distribution system forms an integral part of Siemens All- Electric LNG concept and its electrical distri bution system. It is fully protected with microprocessor-based relays, and centrally controlled and monitored by its super imposed electrical network monitoring and control (ENMC) system to enable maintenance-free operation for over 10 years. 5 Siemens compressors for LNG have a long tradition of excellence. They have earned a reputation of technological leadership and dependability thanks to their superior performance in LNG production and boil-off gas compression. All-Electric LNG opens up new possibilities to control the entire liquefaction process. Using the variable speed electric drive, the compression and refrigeration train capacity no longer depends on the size of the existing gas turbines. Whenever a change in capacity is required, for example, to answer the growing demands of the LNG spot market, this can be a severe problem in conventional LNG plants, since commercially available gas turbines can only be bought at incremental capacities. However, the variable speed electric drive can be fine-tuned to meet individual process requirements to give you extra flexibility. In addition, Siemens compressors with adjustable inlet guide vanes (IGV) have earned a reputation of excellence, starting with their position of global market leader for boil-off gas compression. For main refrigerant-gas compression of LNG process plants, Siemens offers proven single-shaft refrigeration compressor trains in all appropriate ratings for E-LNG plants. These include horizontally or vertically split designs for all common flow rates and pressure ratios that allow optimized process control. 6 A glimpse of the near future: F-LNG LNG production and storage facilities at sea will allow the exploitation of deep-sea and stranded gas reservoires soon. While the consumption of natural gas steadily rises, a growing number of deep-sea and stranded gas reservoirs at sea will be exploited. As a result, processing natural gas on location (at sea) for transportation will become increasingly attractive as more economical resources dry out. That s why Siemens is participating in a floating or F-LNG concept in close cooperation with Shell. The F-LNG production facility is currently being developed to be practically tested soon. The idea behind it is to implement the entire LNG process chain on a barge or vessel along with storage tanks. The floating plant can be moored to an oil rig, process the gas produced by the well, and store it for dispatch by scheduled LNG tankers. F-LNG will enable us to utilize natural gas economically in such locations, where gas resources are too small to justify investments in deep-sea pipelines or onshore liquefaction plants. With F-LNG, hundreds of stranded gas fields producing more than one mtpa could be utilized to enhance the world s gas supply. The flexibility of the system allows us to move it wherever it is needed and to make full use of the plant s expected service life of 30 to 40 years. To keep safety high and operating and maintenance costs low, special requirements for the offshore installations have to be met. Robustness is key, as well as a space-saving concept for the equipment. The drive system can be all-electric, or operate via gas or steam turbines. The latter are very attractive for F-LNG, as they easily fulfill the above requirements and provide extraordinarily long service intervals. 6 Siemens at LNG 16 April 2010
