Sustainability at Christmas Island DHS
What is sustainability? living within the limits of what the environment can provide the equal distribution of resources and opportunities. (NSW Government Environment and Heritage, 2013) Ability or capacity of something to be maintained or to sustain itself (Landlearn NSW, 2013) ability to maintain a certain status or process in existing systems (Benefits of Recycling, 2013) meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs (Sustainable Cities Institute, 2012)
Australian Curriculum Definition Sustainability addresses the ongoing capacity of Earth to maintain all life. sustainability is about reducing our ecological footprint while simultaneously improving the quality of life that we value the liveability of our society. [Sustainability Curriculum Framework, Australian Government, Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts, 2010]
Australian Curriculum and Sustainability Sustainability will allow all young Australians to develop the knowledge, skills, values and world views necessary for them to act in ways that contribute to more sustainable patterns of living. Focus on protecting environments and creating a more ecologically and socially just world through informed action.(acara, 2011)

Did you know?????
No recycling facilities or recycling measures currently exist on Christmas Island
Almost all the food and goods we consume on Christmas Island come form mainland Australia and Singapore
Air freight fresh food and meat must be transported in foam eskies
Approximately 150 eskies weekly!
That s a staggering 7800 eskies a year!
This does not include food for the Immigration Detention Centre
Take the humble banana.. Grown in Carnarvon
Freighted to Perth market by truck
Tired from the journey
Perth market to Perth airport
PER-XCH
XCH- shop/home
In total my banana has travelled 3498 km and costs up to $5 each!
If bananas are expensive on Christmas Island, how much do you think a lettuce is worth??
=
Air freight: up to $16.00 each!!!
It s up to the school community to lead the way in sustainable practices on Christmas Island.
So, what are we doing at CIDHS? Sustainability Committee- a dedicated group including school staff and community members Devised a CIDHS vision statement Working towards a 3 year sustainability plan which will encompass aspects of social and environmental sustainability Applying for grants
Sustainability projects in place
Composting
3 aquaponics units
4 planter beds for growing vegetables and herbs
Shredding paper
Chickens
Worm farm and worm tea
Using produce grown in cooking lessons- LOTE and Home Economics
Lessons Carbon foot print Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Hydroponics excursion What makes good compost Using both sides of paper Renewable energies/reducing use of electricity
Maintenance Year 4-7 Cluster rotations Junior Cluster rotations This is clearly not enough.
What needs to be done Sustainability needs to be embedded in the school plan Dedicated staff Scope and Sequence for PP-10 Integrated across all Year levels Explicit teaching Staff member to lead Budget set up from grants Community involvement
