A Case for Product Stewardship Assuming Responsibility for E-Waste Through Recycling Tim Warren Regional Account Manager
The Call2Recycle program A program of the Founded in 1994 by environmentally-aware rechargeable battery industry members to divert Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd) from entering landfills. Collection launched in the U.S. in 1996; Canada in Cell phone recycling began in Accepted for recycling: - Ni-Cd - Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) - Nickel Zinc (Ni-Zn) - Lithium Ion (Li-ion) - Small Sealed Lead (Pb) - Cell phones
The Call2Recycle program The only national comprehensive recycling program of it s kind. No-cost recycling programs for retailers, businesses, communities, and public agencies. Tens of thousands of free and convenient participating locations nationwide. Program meets stringent rechargeable battery recycling and labeling mandates for manufacturers and marketers. Collection, transport, recycling complies with state and federal laws. To date, the program has recycled almost 50 million pounds of used rechargeable batteries.
Millions of Pounds Total Rechargeable Batteries Recovered 6,940,000 lbs. recycled in 2008 Collection of rechargeable batteries increased by 9.6% SSLA Ni-MH Li-ion Ni-Cd
How the Program Works The collection and recovery process
Recycling Physical Flow Xstrata Sudbury Ontario Nova Pb Ville Ste-Catherine Quebec Canada USA ReCellular Dexter, MI Phones Inmetco Sorting Ellwood City, PA Ni-Cd & Ni-MH Batteries Inmetco Facility Ellwood City, PA
Sorting Process
Waste-less Recycling Process Compliant with all applicable regulations of the U.S. EPA and U.S. OSHA. Natural resources are recycled. Long-term landfill liability is eliminated. Reclaimed nickel and iron turned into stainless steel. Cadmium used to make new Ni-Cd batteries. The battery electrolyte used in the facility's wastewater treatment plant. Remaining non-hazardous byproducts (calcium, alumina, silica, magnesia) creates slag, used as road base and construction aggregate.
Reusable Materials Metals reclaimed from recycling of rechargeable batteries Cadmium, Cobalt, Iron, Lead, Nickel: used in the production of new items such as stainless steel, new rechargeable batteries, corrosion-resistant coatings, road base and construction aggregate. Cell phones: refurbished, when possible. All batteries are recycled. Proceeds from the resale of refurbished phones benefit select charities.
Supply vs. Demand Consumers green awareness Confusion over acceptable recyclable materials creates contamination or safety in handling. Ultimate goal for E-Waste: Keep out of landfills.
Why Recycling E-Waste Is Important Keeps toxic metals out of landfills. Preserves natural resources. E-Waste disposal growing concern. Consumers use an average of 6 wireless products daily. 140 million cell phones retired annually. 61% of Americans either throw away or hoard rechargeable batteries no longer in use. Recycling of municipal waste and scrap materials has lowered the U.S. carbon footprint by approximately 4-5%. *Resources: Sprint, U.S. EPA Environment Analysis Report
A Case for Product Stewardship Environmental issues vs. Profitability Increase in consumer electronics goods Increase in E-Waste disposal Divert hazardous materials from landfill Corporate responsibility for product end-of-life Recent downturn in commodity prices down = less incentive for recycling. Funds necessary to sustain recycling programs
Product Stewardship Industry Examples Automotive batteries & tires Pharmaceuticals E-waste Ban (EU, WEEE, E-Cycling) Televisions and computer monitors Cell phones (CA, ME) All batteries (Canadian provinces, CA) Rechargeable batteries (U.S. Federal, select states/cities)
Emerging Trends Improve packaging Better technology Reuse market Funding Environmental safety Legislation Product stewardship qualification
