Heating with wood ca dwellings (of total ) = 14,4 % Modern single house systems Logwood boilers Wood chip boilers Pellet boilers Heat contracting ( kw) based on wood chips Biomass district heating (> 250 kw) based on wood chips, sawmill by-products

Heating of dwellings in Austria District heating Electricity Natural Gas Wood Coal Heating oil

Development of automatic Wood Heating Systems ( boilers <100 kw, MW)

Wood Energy Contracting Projects A group of farmers build the heating system of a big building or a group of buildings They rent a cellar and install the heating central in the cellar of the building They operate the installations and sell the heat to the users of the building Heat rate is index-linked and heat supply contract is signed for 15 years The installation varies in size between 50 and 250 kw The operators normally use wood chips to produce heat

Biomass District Heating Projects A group of farmers build a biomass district heating plant including boiler room, biomass storage room and heat distribution network They operate the plant and sell the heat to customers (small cities, villages,...) Heat rate is index-linked and heat supply contract is signed for 15 years The installation varies in size between 250 and kw The operators normally use forestry wood chips, industrial wood chips or bark to produce heat

Biomass District Heating plants, MW, 66 % operated by farmers

Green electricity Green Electricity Law since 2003 Feed in tariffs guaranteed for 13 years Supporting Small hydro power (< 10 MW) Wind power Biomass solid, liquid, gas Photovoltaics Geothermal and others Amendment 2006 > max. 17 Mio. Euro/year

Development Green Electricity 2005 Installed: MW Produced electricity: GWh (8 % Biomass)

EU-target 78,1 % in 2010 (of Gross Inland Consumption)

Development of Biomass-CHP Involvement of farmers and forest owners Solid Biomass (wood,...) Especially larger projects are realised by wood processing industry and electric power companies in most cases farmers are only wood chips suppliers Only a few projects are realised, which are operated by farmer cooperatives Feed-in tariffs are guaranteed for 13 years 10,2 to 16 Cent/kWh for wood chips depending on size Biogas Plants operated by farmers based on liquid manure, maize and grass silage, maize and other energy plants Plants bewteen 100 and kwel Feed-in tariffs 10,3 to 16,5 Cent/kWh
