The Nexus: Management, Environment &Health 70 Million TPA of waste generated in urban centers is estimated to more than double by 2031 to 165 Mil.TPA. Only 10% is processed Around 25% of Particulate Matter (Dust) pollution in our cities linked to unscientific waste management (IIT Kanpur Study) Emission of Greenhouse Gas, Methane, ground and surface water degradation due to leachate WHO has observed that 22 types of diseases can be prevented/controlled by improving Municipal Solid (MSW) management
Integrated Processing : Delhi Showing the Way IL&FS Model Construction & Demolition Debris Municipal Solid Collection & Transportation C&D Processing Facility, Burari /Shastri Park Compost Compost Plant, Okhla Bio-degradable Segregation of Products from Recycled C&D Recyclables (inert) Combustible Inert transferred To landfill as soil cover Landfill RDF & WtE, Ghazipur Recyclables
to Energy (WTE) Technologies Combustion Gasification Pyrolysis Bio-methanation Mass Burn RDF Char Syngas Bio-oil Biogas Electricity Methanol, Petrol, Biodiesel, Hydrogen Petrol, Biodiesel, Hydrogen
Requires less Area Reduces the load on landfill Why WTE? Scarcity of land & high difficultly in Siting Processing plants WTE Treatment of high waste quantity Suitable for various types of waste Reduces waste volume > 90%
WtE Plants are essentially Treatment Plants with Power / Energy as a by-product These plants intrinsically require a higher level of emission controls o o to Energy Solution These projects are generally located in and around population centers These incinerate waste that lead to generation of toxic gases like dioxins and furans if proper technology is not used Cost of environmentally compliant & world class WtE plants are very high RDF from Composting Plants MSW RDF Plant Power Plant Grid
Why RDF to Power is preferable over Mass burn? RDF combustion is far better than MSW due to Calorific value is about 3 times the MSW Moisture is lower from % to about % Inerts is lower from about % to 8% As Chlorinated plastics are removed while preparing RDF, formation of Dioxins and Furans is avoided. Size of RDF is as per requirement of the power plant whereas size of MSW varies vastly.
Ghazipur Area : Satellite Image
Ghazipur Dumpsite, Delhi Municipal Solid (MSW) dumped >2000 TPD Dumpsite operational since 1984, over 5 million tons of waste dumped Dumpsite area : 29 hectares Average Height of dumpsite = 25 metres Current population around site : Approx. 100,000 to Energy : A SOLUTION!
Ghazipur to Energy Plant Grab operations RDF Processing Operations Loading after Shredders 9
to Energy, Ghazipur : A Benchmark Project India s State-of-the-art facility - processing 2000 TPD of waste generating 12 MW of power and 127 tons of green fuel (RDF) Plant compliant to Euro emission norms (Flue Gas Treatment, Leachate Treatment Plant, Odor, Dust and Noise control) Plant has generated more than 22.8 million units of green power and processed tons of waste Highest levels of transparency (Continuous Emission Monitoring systems & Visitors gallery) Project ERR of 34%, based on social cost benefit analysis (including land saved, GHG mitigation, avoided health costs due to mitigation of airborne and water pollution) The plant will help in saving 213 acres of land valued at over 2000 crores during the project life Mitigate 8.2 million tons of GHG emissions over next 25 years (life of project) reducing global warming equivalent to removing all the cars on Delhi roads for 100 days
Holistic Environment Management System Social Inclusion (Area Development Plan) Odor Control - Negative pressure - Herbal inoculums Noise Control Enclosed facility Greenbelt Occupational Safety & Health (Dust and odor control) EMS Leachate Treatment Plant Residue Management (Fly ash & Bottom ash) Disaster Management (Fire Safety) Flue Gas Cleaning System (Boiler & Dryer)
Gulmeher - An IL&FS CSR Initiative Registered as a producer company with women as share holders picker women make handicrafts products like calendars, file folders, greeting cards, gift bags & Other decorative items using recycled paper & discarded flowers Financial Inclusion : Kiosk banking facility provided through Inde Pay and State Bank of India at Gulmeher : o 2075 accounts opened since July 2014 Women at Work o 250 persons from the waste picker community have an account at the centre Panchhi : Initiative to mainstream children of rag pickers [theatre/photography/filming] Journey of rag-pickers to artisans & Entrepreneurship!
1200 TPD Integrated MSW Project Chinnaravulapalli Village, Bibi Nagar Mandal Nalgonda Dist, near Hyderabad, Telangana Boiler 1 Boiler 2
Highlights of RDF Power Project, Hyderabad Integrated waste management project : Composting to energy (12 MW) Design capacity to process 1200 TPD of MSW. Separated organics for composting and combustibles will be taken for combustion Public Private Partnership (PPP) Project on Build Own Operate (BOO) basis Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), a stake holder in project Plant on 26 acres of own land purchased by the Company Plant has started taking waste. Boiler 1 started operations.
