Detritus is. 9. A decomposer. 10. As matter cycles through each stage of a food chain or food web, how does biochemical energy escape? READ ALL DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY!!!! Think about a food chain. While they show one example of how energy may move through organisms in an ecosystem, there are many options other than a single chain! A food web is a model ecologists create to express all possible feeding relationships at each trophic level in a community. Food webs are important because they allow each relationship an organism has in its community to be expressed. A food web, unlike a food chain, is not unidirectional because most organisms depend on more than one other species for food. 1) How is a food web different from a food chain? 2) Why are food webs important?

2 Go to (There is a link to this site on the class web site.) Then, click on the link to Build A Food Web. Answer the first question below and then click Start. 1) Where is the ecosystem that you will explore in today s activity? After you click start, read the directions carefully! Do not click start again until you answer the next 3 questions. 2) What is your job? 3) What can you do at any time to make your food web easier to read? 4) Why will it be important for you to make the food web easier to read? HINT: When you start to build the food web, begin by putting the producer toward the bottom of the box and the top consumer at the top. The other organisms will go anywhere in between. 5) When you get the confirmation, keep the screen open! Do not click to continue until you draw the food web you ve created to the best of your ability. Include a sketch of each organism AND its written name. Be sure your arrows are clear and show the direction of energy as it moves through the ecosystem. 6) Once you have your food web drawn, click to continue. Read the prompt on the page (it is also shown here):! Instead of TYPING your answer, please write it here: BE COMPLETE and discuss the effects on all of the organisms. Use AND underline the following vocabulary words in your discussion of at least 3 sentences: Producer OR autotroph, consumer OR heterotroph, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, ecosystem
