1 Intensive Workshop for Sustainable Seawater Desalination in Hong Kong: Membrane-based Desalination Processes (Desal-Pro) City University of Hong Kong May 2015 Organizer: School of Energy and Environment, City University of Hong Kong Co-organizers: Department of Civil Engineering, the University of Hong Kong The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers: Environmental Division Introduction This workshop will be delivered by world renowned professors and engineers from the desalination industry. Converting seawater into drinking water using membranes is considered as an emerging technology option and one of the most favored strategic approaches to provide drinking water. Hong Kong is now planning to build a new desalination plant after decommissioning the first thermal desalination facility in This 2.5-day intensive workshop is intended to provide a platform to thoroughly address the recent advances and challenges in membrane-based desalination technology from theory to practice with a special focus on sustainable seawater desalination in Hong Kong. The key topics covered in this program are seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) Desalination Technologies, Plant System Engineering, Membrane Fouling and Scaling, Innovative Pretreatment Systems, RO Concentrate (Brine) Treatment & Recovery, Reuse Technologies for other Water Sources, Plant Energy Minimization, and Plant O&M for Desalination. The two and half-day event offers Practical course content Discussion opportunities International networking Introduction to the state-of-the-art of the most promising technologies Half-day excursion (Desalination plant site and advanced water treatment works) Date: May 2015 Time: 9:00 a.m. 5:30 p.m. Venue: G5-217, 5/F., Academic 1 (AC1), City University of Hong Kong, Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong Language: English Registration & Enquiries Fee: HKD2,000 (including tea break and lunch on 28 and 29 May 2015) Number of Participants: Limited to 40 Registration: Please register online via Enquiries: School of Energy and Environment, City University of Hong Kong Telephone: / see.enquiry@cityu.edu.hk CPD certificates will be available after the workshop.
2 Who should attend? The program is well-designed to update Hong Kong water professionals in industry, academia and government to prepare for the challenge and practice of desalination in Hong Kong. This event aims at engineers, scientists, public policy experts, industry leaders and government officials to help enhance professional knowledge for membrane-based desalination processes, to assist in solving related practical/theoretical problems and to create further collaborative opportunities. Short Bios of Speakers Prof. Joon Ha Kim is a Professor of Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology and has a background of Chemical Engineering discipline from Korea as well as California in the US. He has researched on the academic area of environmental systems engineering, which associates complex environmental systems with control theories, modelings, and optimized solutions to mitigate the problems caused by the intrinsic complexities in the systems. The main research areas of Prof. Kim are environmental systems engineering including open and closed systems. Specifically, he is specialized in data-mining and modeling of complex systems, desalination engineering and optimization, watershed modeling and water pollution management, membrane systems optimization in water treatment, and non-point source pollutants modeling and management. Prof Ho Kyong Shon is currently an ARC Future Fellow. Since 1998, he has made significant contributions to the understanding of physico-chemical water treatment processes. The initial stage of his research career focused on understanding membrane fouling mechanisms of organic/inorganic materials for wastewater reuse. He has been recently involved in extensive experience of membrane-based desalination processes through National Centre of Excellence Desalination in Australia, Australia Research Council Discovery Projects (ARC DP), European Desalination project (MEDINA) and SeaHERO Korean Desalination project. Prof. Chuyang Y. Tang is an associate professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, the University of Hong Kong. Before that, he worked as an associate professor at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, where he also served as the Deputy Director of the Singapore Membrane Technology Centre. Dr. Tang obtained his PhD degree from the Environmental Engineering and Science Program at Stanford University in His main research interests include membrane technology, water and wastewater treatment, desalination, water reclamation, water chemistry, and advanced physical and chemical processes. Dr. Tang has authored/co-authored more than 110 refereed journal papers with a total citation of 3479 and an H-index of 31. He has been awarded numerous Most Cited Paper Awards by various journals. He is a recipient of the Finland Distinguished Professor Programme Fellows Award and the International Desalination Association Fellow Award. Dr Tao He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the Membrane Technology Group, University Twente, Enschede, in He worked in membrane companies, X- Flow, Norit from Nov 2001-March 2006 as a Senior Researcher/ Process Engineer. Before he went back to China in 2007, he worked for the French company, Aquasource/Degremont, Toulouse, France. Dr. He joined Nanjing University of Technology as a Professor between and moved to Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI), Chinese Academy of Sciences. He founded the Laboratory for Membrane Materials and Separation Technology at SARI. His research interests include membrane formation, forward osmosis, nanofiltration, membrane distillation, solvent resistant membrane and liquid-liquid extraction. He has published about 60 scientific papers and applied/granted more than 20 patents.
3 Ir Michael Leung graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a B.Sc. in Engineering in He is a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. Ir Leung also qualifies as a non practising barrister. Ir Leung joined the Government in 1990 as an Assistant Engineer. He worked in various spheres of water supply in Hong Kong in planning, design and operation as well as prosecution. In 2006 he joined Works Branch of Development Bureau and was responsible for overseeing the delivery of large-scale infrastructure projects at a policy level. In 2011 he joined Highways Department and participated in a number of major highways projects such as Central Kowloon Route. Currently he is in charge of the implementation of key waterworks projects at a total estimate of $20 billion, including Tai Po Water Treatment Plant Extension and Desalination Plant in Tseung Kwan O. Professor Alicia K. J. An is an Assistant Professor at the School of Energy and Environment, City University of Hong Kong. Dr. An s current research focus is developing sustainable water resources including seawater desalination and rainwater harvest.
