About With 50 years of expertise, has a strong heritage, and track record. works with communities to find practical, lasting solutions that help people lift themselves out of poverty while safeguarding the planet. Practical Action s work is people focused, locally relevant, environmentally sensitive and offers tangible ways out of poverty. The organization has carved a niche in demonstrating alternatives, sharing knowledge and influencing change. 2. The organization is active in 45 countries across Asia, Africa and Latin America, delivering clean water and sustainable energy, improving food security and reducing the risk of natural disasters, demonstrating that technology holds the answer to many of the world s problems and has the power to transform lives. Strategic Business Plan
in East Africa Eastern Africa (formerly ITDG-EA) has worked in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan and Ethiopia since the mid-80s. With the regional headquarters in Kenya, Practical Action has field offices in Lodwar (covering the Karamoja Cluster in Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia), Kisumu (covering the Lake Victoria Basin Region) and Rwanda. - Eastern Africa Regional Office Headquarters is Located in Nairobi,Kenya Strategic Business Plan
Strategic Intent By 2030, s ambition is to have transformed the way technology is used to improve the lives of people living in, or vulnerable to, poverty. Our Strategic Business Plan reflects how we will start this journey in Kenya and the rest of the East Africa Region. The Strategic Intent for 2030 builds on a strong organizational heritage, working with communities in the development and use of technology to improve their lives. It focuses on investing much greater efforts to reach out and work with others, and to inspire wider systemic change. We believe that technology is a key enabler of human development and that technological innovation has the power to propel us into a better world. Our Framework for Change Our Framework for Change provides a model of how we believe change can happen. We believe that lasting change requires a systemic approach to understanding problems at their root causes, the opportunities for making change at different levels and the barriers faced by different groups, especially women. We recognise that no organisation alone can bring about these changes. To succeed, we will need to engage and inspire practitioners, policymakers, markets, funders and communities working together. 4. Strategic Business Plan
Demonstrate Partnering with people using technology to find practical solutions that work, Sustainably. Transforming the way technology is used to improve the lives of people living in, or vulnerable to poverty Inspire Working to achieve specific policy and practice change; and building a global constituency of support for our cause Learn from our work, and others, capturing evidence, and adapting our approach to maximise impact. Framework For Change Strategic Business Plan

We will pay special attention to women, and other marginalized groups, since they often have least access to technology, and their needs are often overlooked. Technology Sectors and Goals a) Disaster Risk Reduction ensure that national and local planning for disaster preparedness and response is inclusive and informed by priorities of people living in poverty especially those that are most marginalized. Goal: Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Sub-Goal: Enabled Communities Driving DRR Change Ambition by 2020: will partner with stakeholders to ensure that national investments are informed by the risk reduction priorities of disaster vulnerable communities and specifically approaches to minimise or mitigate the impact of floods and drought. How we will achieve this? will partner with local government to advocate for an enabling policy and legal environment towards reducing disaster risks. This will ensure that national and local planning for disaster preparedness and response is inclusive and informed by priorities of people living in poverty especially those of the most marginalized. will ensure the engagement of the voice of communities in DRR analysis, planning and action and build DRR capacity on climate smart information amongst others. Geographic Locations: Lake Victoria Basin and the Karamoja Cluster Target Beneficiaries: 30,000 people living in ASALs and a further 150,000 people living in urban and peri-urban areas 6. 7 Goal: Urban Services/WASH Sub-Goal: WASH b) Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) will improve access to clean water for informal slum dwellers, scale up access to sanitation and embed hygiene behavior change messages throughout our work including aspects of menstrual hygiene management. Change Ambition by 2020: Primarily through a community led total sanitation approach, will ensure that communities have access to improved water, sanitation and hygiene aiming for safely managed services as defined by SDG6. How we will achieve this? This will be achieved by promoting the uptake of decentralized and appropriate low-cost technologies and systems delivered through partnerships with informal and formal service providers to improve access to clean water for informal slum dwellers and scaling up access to sanitation and embedding hygiene behaviour change messages throughout our work including aspects of menstrual hygiene management. Importantly, understanding the gender dimensions of different technologies and systems for WASH and promoting women as key decision makers at the local level. How we will achieve this? will work with primarily informal settlements communities to improve the waste management solutions in their communities through behavioural change campaigns, promoting waste separation and collection systems that work for poor communities. We will continue to partner with local governance to ensure that decentralised solid waste management is embedded in policy and practice. will work with informal waster workers to improve their livelihoods, working conditions and social status through PMSD and other approaches in particular waste value chains. Geographic Locations: Urban Areas (focusing on the Northern Rift and the Lake Victoria Basin) Target Beneficiaries: 300,000 people living in low-income urban settlements. Strategic Business Plan
