Rainwater Harvesting Introduction Water, or the lack of water, is becoming an ever increasing issue in the UK and needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency. Climate change, over extraction of water resources and population growth are largely to blame for the current and future areas of water stress in the UK. Indeed, we are seeing an increasing use of Hosepipe Bans being implemented by a number of Water Companies in the UK as part of the measures to combat this very real problem New technologies like rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling enable us to reduce the water consumption by using resources that are mostly available to all of us coming from the roof or draining from our showers, baths and hand wash basins. Why not make use of them? Great benefits with little effort: Saving mains water Flood reduction due to storage tanks and usage Combinable with our greywater recycling systems Compact system and easy to install components Adoptable to every type of building due to flexible above or below ground systems No use of chemicals Energy efficient system design Enhanced Capital Allowance applicable via Water Technology List Complies with BREEAM, LEED, CFSH & WRAS requirements Best water quality due to simple three step filtration/separation Rainwater is collected from the roof and collected via the gutter or siphonic drainage system. Before entering the storage tank, the water is filtered. Large particles such as leaves, moss and twigs are separated. The filtered water is fed into the storage tank via a calmed inlet, thus ensuring that the water inside of the tank stays calm and small particles can settle to the bottom or float to the surface. The water is then pumped to the serviced appliances via a floating extraction which always takes the water below the surface and above the bottom of the tank. The floating extraction has another filter to avoid fine suspended matter entering the supply. Water quality If a rainwater harvesting system is professionally designed and installed, the water quality should be more than sufficient for non potable applications such as WC flushing, laundry etc. More details on the water quality are available in BS8515:2009. 3 System Components High quality, compact & easy to install Example: Filtertank, AC 1100 control unit with supply pump arrangement ) Pre-Filtration Filtering out larger debris such as leaves 2) Rainwater storage tank collects and stores the incoming rainwater 3) Supply pump (optional) supplies water from storage tank to control unit unless tank is close enough to tank to prime directly 4) Aqua-Control Control unit with integrated booster pump set and mains water back-up according to BS8515 5) Expansion vessel Reducing run time of pumps and protecting equipment against small leaks Different systems for different requirements Aquality offers a wide range of systems for all types of buildings such as: Educational buildings e.g. schools, universities, colleges, student accommodations Retail buildings e.g. supermarkets, warehouses, distribution centers Public buildings e.g. police, fire stations, prisons, council offices Other commercial buildings Different types of buildings may require different types of systems, such as: Above / below ground systems Gravity / direct systems Rainwater / Greywater Attenuation / Combined systems 6) Soak away (optional) Infiltration system with pre-sedimentation pit 3 P age

Pre-Filtration Highly efficient, manual to self-cleaning, low invert levels Aquality offers a vast range of filters to suit from 150m² to 60,000m² roof area. They can be installed underground, indoors or factory installed in our storage tanks. Filters should be self-cleaning but reality shows that maintenance cannot be avoided unless the filters are equipped with a self-cleaning mechanism. These can be semi-automatic or fully automatic. The majority of our filters are prefitted with semi/fully automatic cleaning facilities. Operation The commercial filters have been developed for large rainwater harvesting systems to cope with flow rates up to 1800 l/s. The filters use a special, purpose designed stainless steel grid with a filter mesh size of 0.7mm. The filter grid elements are formed so that they make perfect use of the water molecule characteristics and therefore the water can pass to the storage tank at high collection efficiency of up to 99%. Dirt particles such as leaves, moss & twigs are separated out. This not only reduces the amount of organic load reaching the tank, but also reduces potential maintenance of the storage tank itself. Separating dirt particles while keeping high filter efficiency Particles will get stuck in the filter grid over time, so filter eventually needs to be cleaned. Debris can be removed by simply flushing the filter grid, therefore access to the filter grids is essential. As most filters are underground installations, with potential confined space issues, a semi-automatic or even fully automatic cleaning system is recommended. The majority of our filters are either semi or fully automatic. Fully automatic filters work in conjunction with Aquality s control units. AWD filter water diversion without mechanical moving parts: In cases where the rainwater needs to be diverted away from the tank when it is full e.g. due to low drainage connections, the AWD filter is the perfect option. It diverts the rainwater away from the tank by itself when the tank is full using a patented air bubble effect. Filter with high collection efficiency Stainless steel grid Water diversion without using moving mechanical parts Ideal for combination with greywater systems to comply with BS8525 Semi-automatic filter arrangement Integrated Rainwater Filter 4 P age

Rainwater Storage tanks Highly flexible range for every situation ,000 ltr capacity in a single tank Aquality aims to provide a solution not a product. Therefore we offer a flexible product range including tanks in all sizes that will suit any requirement high loading, above or underground, modular & easy to transport. The tank material is chosen to suit site specific requirements. All tanks are equipped with calmed inlets and an overflow device as to BS8515. They can be factory fitted with a filter, thus easing installation. Integrated filters will reduce drainage fall through the system. For underground installations, GRP, PE Concrete & plastic box (crate) systems are recommended. For above ground installations, our large range of sectional/single piece GRP or PE-Tanks is the preferred choice. Underground GRP Tanks are most commonly used for Rainwater Harvesting and can be supplied suitable for installation with either a pea gravel or concrete backfill. The site situation should be discussed at an early stage to assist in product selection, thus ensuring the most cost effective method of water storage is employed. 5 P age

Aqua-Control units Compact booster pump set with integrated mains water back-up and controls The Aqua Control units have been developed to ensure a compact, easy to install product that can accommodates all necessary features of a modern rainwater / greywater control unit. They are purpose designed for the application to ensure integrated and external components will work as one. Operation The Aqua-Controls are fully equipped control units with integrated break tank, booster pump set and electronic control. The control unit monitors the water level in the rainwater tank as well as in the mains back up break tank. The selfpriming booster pump set supplies the water directly to the applications. In case of rain- or greywater shortage or manual setting, the Aqua-Control feeds mains water automatically and on demand, via an AA-type air gap, into the intermediate tank (in compliance with BS 8515 / BS 8525). As an automatic maintenance feature the solenoid valve of the mains water back-up system is regularly opened. If mains water has not been used for a certain time period the unit will flush the mains water pipe and thereby avoid stagnation. Preset standard settings can be adjusted to meet project specific needs. The units have a manual over-ride for maintenance and automatic switch over in case of supply pump failure from storage tank. AC 5000 supplying xxx WCs The Aqua Control units have been developed to cover all design led requirements of a commercial sized building including operating safety, reliability, and energy saving. The systems offer in-depth monitoring ability for modern facility management. These units are being used in all building types from schools, offices & supermarkets to airports and stadiums. The Aqua-Control 5000 is a unit that can be completely customised to all specific requirements. The units are very compact as the table below indicates. 8 Pre-wired & fitted in a single, compact, steel housing Installation time & cost is reduced and the responsibility (warranty) to assemble the unit is taken away from the installer. The compact design will greatly reduce space requirement within the plant room. All connections are labeled for easy installation Booster pumps All units will be supplied with at least two duty/assist stainless steel multi stage pumps. Single pump failure will automatically operate the other pump to provide continuity of service and will operate alarm system to communicate the pump loss to the operator via BMS. PERCS The Pump Energy Reduction Control System not only reduces the energy for the pumping the non-potable water to its applications by using the used energy from supply to boost the water. Unison HQ, London Volt free contact for BMS connection The unit is pre-wired for connection to the client s Building Management System and will provide a common fault signal which can then be interpreted on the unit s visual display Advanced BMS via protocols The unit can communicate alarms via pre-wired connection to external building management systems. It will inform about alarm status and pinpoint specific faults. The following protocols can be used Ethernet, CanOpen and Profibus. Education/Corporate Panel connectable Pre-wired for quick and simple connection to the optional visual display panel. Unit will communicate tank water level, mains water and rainwater consumption and would be used for Educational or Corporate display to promote the building s environmental credentials. Pipe burst alarm or leakage alarm function Unit will detect a major leakage / pipe burst in the pressure pipe serving the serviced appliances. In the event of pipe burst detection, the system will stop water supply to avoid potential flooding and consumption of water. This would then be signaled as an alarm status if connected to a BMS Mains water back-up fault alarm Unit will detect a fault in the mains water back up supply and communicate the problem by alarm 8 P age

AC 5000 supplied 200 WCs at Westfield Shopping Centre, London Remote monitoring facility Unit can be remotely monitored and will provide status / operational information, water consumption figures and the need for required maintenance thus minimizing the need to visit the system personally to check status. UV disinfection ECO-Synchronizer (patented) Unit will operate an optional UV Disinfection System in a way that will reduce run time and therefore significantly reduce energy consumption. The operation will reduce the need for consumable component replacement / maintenance and will greatly increase the life span of the Disinfection System Anti Stagnation control (programmable) Potential for stagnation of the incoming mains water supply due to infrequent use is eliminated by using the project programmable Anti Stagnation flush facility. Automatic water drain down system Unit can drain down tank on demand or automatically due to set schedule. This will enable easy maintenance on tanks or ensure water quality as required in the BS 8525 for greywater recycling systems. Function will only work in conjunction with drain down package (available as accessory). Dual supply tank control (basic and advanced) TESCO Supermarket, Berwick Unit can operate two independent rainwater holding tanks and will select water from tank holding the largest volume. The basic version will only transfer water to the second tank. The advanced version will allow the unit to decide from what tank to draw the water from first, dependant on water level.
