Freshwater Use Valuation for the St. Johns River Basin, Florida, USA Christopher J. Brown, Ph.D., P.E. Associate Professor, University of North Florida & Ms. Cecilia McKeon, former graduate student University of North Florida
Presentation Outline Discuss Project Location and Study Area. Discuss Ecosystem Services. Discuss Valuation of Water. Discuss Water Use Data. Discuss Results. Summary and Future Direction.
Project Study Area Map
Ecosystem Services Way to value services that natural systems contribute to our society. Many examples ranging from flood storage in wetlands to crop pollination by bees to dilution of waste in water to supply of drinking water which is the focus of this presentation.
Valuation of Water For this presentation, we will focus upon both consumptive use of water (e.g. water taken out of the system on purpose to supply drinking water or irrigation water) AND nonconsumptive use (e.g. thermoelectric cooling).
Valuation of Water Many methods exist to estimate the value of both consumptive water use and nonconsumptive use. These include: Stated preference method; Hedonic pricing; Productivity method; Replacement cost; and, Benefit transfer method. We used this one.
Water Use Data Sources of data for the study included the U.S. Geological Survey and the SJRWMD. In general, data was reported by County but some portions of certain counties were not contained within the St. Johns River Watershed. Therefore, these water use data were prorated to the percentage of each county included in the Watershed.

Water Use Categories Public Supply; 1,782,928 m 3 /d total with only about 1.6% coming from Surface Water while remainder is from groundwater pumping wells. Valued at about $367 million with Surface Water making up ~ $6.28 million.
Water Use Categories Commercial/Industrial Supply; 255,061 m 3 /d total with only about 37% coming from Surface Water while remainder is from groundwater pumping wells. Valued at about $29.76 million with Surface Water making up ~ $11.10 million.
Water Use Categories Agricultural Irrigation Supply; 1,200,057 m 3 /d total with only about 27% coming from Surface Water while remainder is from groundwater pumping wells. Valued at about $15.65 million with Surface Water making up ~ $4.24 million.
Water Use Categories Recreational Irrigation Supply; 212,224 m 3 /d total with only about 63% coming from Surface Water while remainder is from groundwater pumping wells. Valued at about $63.00 million with Surface Water making up ~ $39.62 million.
Water Use Categories Thermoelectric Cooling Supply; 514,775 m 3 /d total with only about 94% coming from Surface Water while remainder is from groundwater pumping wells. Valued at about $7.45 million with Surface Water making up ~ $6.96 million.
