5 Background for the X-chopper Development Initiated by clients wanting to include: - Solid biomass difficult to handle but with high gas potential (for example farm yard manure/deep litter, straw, grass, vegetable waste) - With a minimum energy demand for the pre-treatment Existing solutions for pre-treatment were not acceptable in relation to the functioning and the energy demand

17 Other Types of High Solid Material Straw, pre-treatment: X-chopper: high Opex with large volumes Ensiling of chopped straw: Low Opex, can also handle low quality straw. Require storage space Briquetting of straw: High Capex & Opex. High quality of the input to the digester. Volume reduction Pressure cooking: Very high Capex and Opex Poultry manure which is also high in nitrogen: Very high dry matter of broiler manure (60-65%) Mono digestion of poultry manure only possible if Addition of large quantities of water, or Nitrogen reduction Xergi has developed the NiX concept for this 17
