MECHANICAL ENGINEERING CAREER GUIDE 1 Mechanical Mechanical is the discipline that applies engineering, physics, and materials science principles to design, analyse, manufacture, and maintain mechanical systems. It is one of the oldest and broadest of the engineering disciplines. Mechanical is a diverse and flexible discipline, that finds expression in almost all spheres of the modern world. Everything that has a movement must have involved a mechanical engineer at some point. In this field, the engineers need a broad spectrum of skill-sets comprising of technical, social, economic, and environmental domains. A mechanical engineer will work on solving the problems on motions, energy and force through the principles of engineering. Mechanics, energy and heat, mathematics, engineering sciences, design and manufacturing form the foundation of mechanical engineering. Mechanics also includes dynamics of fluids and gases, ranging from still water to hypersonic gases flowing around a space vehicle; it involves the motion of anything from a particle to a machine or complex structure.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING CAREER GUIDE 2 Mechanical Engineer Job Duties n Evaluates mechanical and electromechanical systems and products by designing and conducting research programs; applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, heat transfer, and materials. n Confirms system and product capabilities by designing feasibility and testing methods; testing properties. n Develops mechanical and electromechanical products by studying customer requirements; researching and testing manufacturing and assembly methods and materials; soliciting observations from operators. n Develops manufacturing processes by designing and modifying equipment for fabricating, building, assembling, and installing components. n Assures system and product quality by designing testing methods; testing finished- product and system capabilities; confirming fabrication, assembly, and installation processes.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING CAREER GUIDE 3 n Prepares product reports by collecting, analysing, and summarizing information and trends. n Provides engineering information by answering questions and requests. n Maintains product and company reputation by complying with government regulations. n Keeps equipment operational by coordinating maintenance and repair services; following manufacturer s instructions and established procedures; requesting special services. n Maintains system and product data base n Completes projects by training and guiding technicians. n Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies. n Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING CAREER GUIDE 4 n Scope n Higher Education Opportunities n PG Programmes While everyone is busy chasing jobs, your emphasis should be developing yourselves to by pursue higher education if possible. Here are some of the focus areas to pursue in Masters (MTech / ME / MS). Thermal & Fluids Robotics & Automation Design Thermal Science & Energy Systems Manufacturing Automotive Renewable Energy Technologies Material Science & Some students have also been selected for international student exchange programs in institutions like Polytechnic de Milano, Italy, University of California, and Davis etc.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING CAREER GUIDE 5 Career Options n Placements Mechanical is the innovative application of science and technology to the design, production and operation of mechanical devices, machinery and systems. Unlike other engineering degrees, mechanical engineers have always been in demand. Mechanics, energy and heat, mathematics, engineering sciences, design and manufacturing form the foundation of Mechanical. Mechanics includes fluids, ranging from still water to hypersonic gases flowing around a space vehicle; it involves the motion of anything from a particle to a machine or complex structure. They also design industrial machinery and processes, in manufacturing, such as paper mills or car assembly plants. Mechanical also involves the efficient use of energy in processes such as a heating system for a hospital or a refrigeration plant for food exports.
