Over the past few years, mining industry has arguably met with the most intense global criticism as it is a resource extraction sector that consumes vast amounts of energy and produces huge amounts of wastes. There is an ongoing debate on whether mining can be described sustainable. It is also important to note that mining has evolved from a focus on resource development at a minimum cost to a more holistic approach that balances economic, environmental and social consideration. This session aims to focus on the initiatives of companies that are pursuing a path towards sustainable mining. Oil and gas industry: managing energy challenges sustainably The extractive industries like oil and gas produce essential inputs for global economy. Demand for such inputs is likely to increase as people seek to improve their living standards. However, these industries can aggravate and cause serious environmental, health and social problems including conflict and war. The biggest challenge today is to provide the world with enough energy to meet growing demand, in a sustainable way.as oil and gas production and exploration continues to be a priority, companies and agencies are implementing regulations that will help to enhance sustainability in the industry. Roadmap for building 100 smart cites in India The urban landscape is undergoing massive transformation in recent years. Cities across the globe today are trying to formulate master plans to develop citywide command and control network that monitors and optimizes the delivery of services like power, water, traffic and healthcare. The wave of urbanisation in India represents one of the country's greatest opportunities as well as one of its most serious challenges. India struggles with a number of significant barriers that continue to hamper the development of urban infrastructure. There is a need for more efficient and sustainable solution for building smart cities which will have selfsustainable habitats with minimal pollution levels, maximum recycling, optimized energy supplies and efficient public transportation. The plenary will discuss the solutions and best practices for transforming rapidly growing urban areas into smarter cities. Energising the future India is one of the world's fastest growing energy markets and is expected to be the secondlargest contributor to the increase in global energy demand by Renewable energy has the potential to re-energize India's economy, allowing the country to achieve energy independence, reduce its trade deficits and propel towards a Green Nation. Energy issues need to be addressed holistically, and by engaging multiple stakeholders in dialogue to embrace renewable energy. As the energy infrastructure in India is not fully developed as yet, there is an opportunity to make the right choices today. This session will focus on recognizing barriers and implementing collaborative actions and solutions to promote renewable energy in the country.

5 ideas for a better tomorrow Decentralising sustainable development in Indian states Indian states are facing the challenge for rapid economic growth, social equity and inclusion, and environmental sustainability. The urge for rapid growth leads to continuous use of natural resources beyond the threshold of resilience of the ecosystem. Taking a more bottom up view for development of a state can give an opportunity to radically rethink about its development in a sustainable way. Decentralised participatory planning leads to generation of ownership which, in turn is crucial for sustainability of any development intervention. During the plenary, it is anticipated that the participating states will discuss the challenges and present a blueprint for sustainable and inclusive growth in their respective states. Integrated Reporting: rethinking capitalism The global leaders have made a recent call to rethink capitalism. The value that any business creates needs to be looked at from stakeholder s perspective and not just the shareholders perspective. Integrated Reporting enables a sustainable business outlook by supporting the integration of sustainable value creation within an organization s strategy, governance and business model. This session will focus on the importance and need of Integrated Reporting in today s business environment together with the roles of different stakeholders in rethinking capitalism. Valuing natural capital Nature provides enormous amounts of inputs and services annually that are vital to long-term business success and global economic growth. As threats to the world s critical ecosystems multiply, so too do business risks. Today, businesses are trying to enhance their bottom lines by integrating the value of natural capital into their strategy, operations, accounting and reporting. Companies that work to reduce their negative impacts on ecosystems often discover new opportunities to boost resource productivity and efficiency, mitigate natural resource risks, create new business opportunities and respond to changing consumer preferences. This session will focus on initiatives of companies that create significant business benefits by developing resource resilience as well as creating community goodwill for the license to operate. Sustainable and inclusive innovation (SI2) The environmental and social challenges are creating business risk as well as growth and business opportunities. Today, companies need to look at the risk and transform it into possible business opportunities through innovative solutions. Companies are trying to save this precious resource by encouraging technological innovations, reducing water footprint, raising public awareness, forming partnerships with public sector organisations and supporting national strategies that aim to provide access to safe water by all. This session aims to discuss the best practices that lead to sustainable, integrated and efficient management of water resources. Sustainable agriculture for food security As world population edges closer to 9.6 billion by 2050, it is estimated that agricultural systems will need to increase food production by 70% to match growing demand for food. The world needs a new vision in the field of agriculture so that it can ensure environmental sustainability, economic opportunity and food security for the marginal communities. Public-private partnerships, market-based approaches, environmental best practices and developing agricultural markets by providing opportunities for small farmers can lead to increase in food production and solve hunger crisis.
