5 totaliser showing the amount of liquid Description of device The device is capable of measuring liquid flow rates in pipes. It is available in a number of versions, with flow rates ranging from 0.5 to 600 l/min, with or without digital display (Visual Flow model). The flow rate is measured using a magnetic induction-based electronic system, making it possible to have a flow section that is totally unobstructed and without moving parts. This feature makes it possible to keep performance of the device unaltered over time, even when working with liquids in which suspended solids are present. Resistance to chemical agents and to high working pressure is achieved thanks to the use of stainless steel, polypropylene and polyamide materials. Polypropylene and polyamide are reinforced with glass fibres. The maximum working pressure (20 or 40 bar) depends on the type of connection used. It is available with flanged connections for Arag valves, series 463 and 473, or threaded 1 and 1 ¼ connections. Measurements may be viewed on the display or sent as an electric signal to other control units. The display unit (integrated in the Visual Flow model) consists of a liquid crystal display and two buttons. The display can show the instantaneous flow rate (expressed in l/min) or a (expressed in l) that has passed through the measuring device. The keys on the display unit can be used to modify the system s calibration constants. Test method The device in question was connected, via the 1 threaded connection, to the delivery pipe of a piston-diaphragm pump having a maximum nominal flow rate of 220 l/min. Rigid pipes 250 mm in length and 28 mm in diameter (inner) were used as flow meter device inlets and outlets. To obtain different flow rate values a flow regulation device was fitted between the pump and the measuring device being tested. Tests were carried out with water not containing suspended solids having a temperature of between 18 and 22 C and with a suspension having a 1% copper oxychloride concentration. Working pressures of 1.5 and 10 bar were used. Tests were performed within the instrument s nominal operating range (from 10 to 200 l/min). The accuracy of the flow meter under review was determined by comparing values given on the display with the actual amount of water passing through 5/8

6 the device, calculated by weighting with precision scales.. Measuring accuracy was expressed as the percentage difference between the value given on the display and the actual value. Reproducibility, ascertained via subsequent measurements using the same flow rate value, was expressed as the coefficient of variation (CV). All measurements were taken using the calibration coefficient (300 pulses/l) supplied by the manufacturer. Results functional tests, using the standard calibration coefficient supplied by the manufacturer, shows that the deviation between the actual flow rate and that indicated on the device display is generally below 1%. The mean error is 0.6%. (Fig. 1). The error calculated on the device s end scale value is less than the nominal value indicated by the manufacturer (Fig. 2). The performance of the flow rate meter in question is not unduly affected by the type of liquid used or by the working pressure. The coefficient of variation calculated on the basis of results obtained from successive measurements but using the same flow rate value is less than 1% under all test conditions. It is suitable for use with sprayers to control the amount of liquid delivered and to calculate the amount of water introduced into the tank during filling operations. Remarks Notes on functionality The flow meter under review proved capable of supplying good results within the nominal operating range. The device is endowed with a CE Declaration of conformity to Directive 89/336/EEC and subsequent amendments (electromagnetic compatibility) and with an owner s manual in compliance with existing law provisions. 7/8
