3 July, 0 File Burgess Engineering Inc. Lake St. Grimsby, Ontario LM G Attention Andrew Burgess, P.Eng. FOUNDATION INVESTIGATION REPORT OVERHEAD SIGN SUPPORTS GARDINER EXPREWAY & DON VALLEY PARKWAY TORONTO, ONTARIO Dear Mr. Burgess This letter presents the factual data obtained from a foundation investigation carried out by Thurber Engineering Ltd. (Thurber) for the proposed overhead cantilever and tri-cord signs within the City of Toronto. The signs will be positioned along Gardiner Expressway (FGG), Lakeshore Boulevard, Don Valley Parkway (DVP) and the Don Valley Parkway ramp to/from Bayview Avenue. The purpose of this investigation is to provide subsurface information at selected locations within the general vicinities of the sign locations. Design aspects of these signs are not part of this scope of work. Thurber has been retained by Burgess Engineering Inc. (BEI) to carry out this investigation on behalf of the City of Toronto (City).. BOREHOLE PROGRAM BEI provided Thurber with the approximate locations for each of the 9 proposed signs. A total of 0 boreholes were originally proposed to be drilled throughout the project areas; six holes would be drilled along the FGG and Lakeshore Boulevard, and four boreholes would be drilled for the DVP and the adjacent Bayview ramp. The borehole investigation was carried out during spring maintenance closures organized by the City. Drilling of the 0 proposed boreholes was subject to utility locate completion within the relatively short window of time available before the weekend closures. Utility locates were requested immediately upon receiving the information on the proposed sign locations. Based on completed utility locates and field assessment of drilling feasibility at each location, adjustments of drilling locations have been made and ultimately 8 out of 0 boreholes could be drilled. of

4 . INVESTIGATION PROCEDURES. Field Investigation The borehole investigation was carried out on April, 0 during the FGG closure and on May, 0 during the DVP closure. The as-drilled program consisted of drilling boreholes on the FGG and boreholes on the DVP and its adjacent ramp. 5 All boreholes were drilled by a specialist drilling contractor using truck mounted drill rigs and samples were recovered using Standard Penetration Testing (SPT). All drilling was supervised by a member of Thurber s staff. Boreholes were advanced to. m depth or auger/spt refusal. Sampling was carried out at selected intervals of depth. Groundwater conditions were observed and recorded during borehole advance and upon completion. Within shale bedrock, SPT was carried out until refusal. Coring of bedrock was not a part of this scope of work. Upon completion of drilling, backfilling of the boreholes was carried out in general accordance with the requirements of O.Reg. 90. Ground surface elevations are approximate and based on preliminary information provided by BEI.. Laboratory Testing Geotechnical laboratory testing consisted of natural moisture content determination and visual identification on all samples. Grain size analysis and Atterberg Limits testing were also conducted on selected samples. No chemical laboratory testing for environmental assessment purposes was conducted. All geotechnical laboratory testing results are presented in the Record of Boreholes immediately following the text.. SUBSURFACE STRATIGRAPHY This section presents a generalized summary of the subsurface conditions encountered in the boreholes. Detailed soil and groundwater conditions are presented in the Records of Boreholes immediately following the text. All boreholes were drilled within the paved portion of the roadways and encountered a pavement structure at the surface. In general, the pavement consisted of 00 to mm of asphalt overlying sand to sand and gravel up to 0. m in thickness.. Gardiner Expressway.. Clayey Silt Clayey silt was present in Boreholes BH-0 and BH- immediately beneath the pavement structure. The base of these layers was at about. to. m depths. This layer is brown in colour containing some sand and trace gravel. The SPT N values ranged from to 8 blows per 0. m penetration indicating a firm to very stiff consistency. Measured moisture contents ranged between % and %. Client Burgess Engineering Inc. Date 0/0/0 File No Page of E-File H\9\0\0 - Gardiner and DVP OH signs\report\project Summary Letter_final.docx of

6 .. Silts and Sands Deposits of silt and sand with varying composition of sandy silt, sand and silt to silty sand were encountered in Boreholes BH-0, BH- and BH-. The base of the silts and sands was at about. to. m depths. These soils are typically brown in colour with trace gravel and clay. The SPT N values ranged from 8 to blows per 0. m penetration with most values between and, indicating a typically compact condition. Measured moisture contents ranged between 0% and 8%. Gradation test results for these deposits are provided on the borehole logs... Silty Clay to Clayey Silt Till Silty clay to clayey silt till was encountered immediately above the weathered shale bedrock in Boreholes BH-0, BH-, BH- and BH-. The base of the till layer was at about.8 to.8 m depths where fully penetrated. Borehole BH- terminated within the till at a depth of. m. This till is generally brown in colour becoming grey with depth, and contains trace sand and gravel. The SPT N values ranged between and blows per 0. m penetration indicating a stiff to hard consistency. Measured moisture contents ranged between % and 0%. Gradation test results for the till are presented on the borehole logs. Glacial tills inherently contain cobbles and boulders... Weathered Shale Bedrock Underlying the above soils, weathered shale was encountered in Boreholes BH-0, BH-0, BH-, BH- and BH-. The depths to the weathered bedrock are tabulated below BH Depth to Weathered Bedrock (m) The shale is grey in colour and the upper part is generally in a highly weathered state. It is penetrable by augering to varying depths. Auger refusal was encountered at. m depth in Boreholes BH-0 and BH-, and SPT refusal was noted at. m depth in Borehole BH-. SPT N values in the weathered shale ranged from blows per 0. m penetration to greater than 00 blows for less than 0. m penetration. The moisture content of the weathered shale ranged from to %. The shale bedrock is known to contain very hard interbeds... Groundwater Conditions No free water was encountered in Boreholes BH-0, BH-0, BH-, BH- and BH- during drilling. In Borehole BH-, a water level at.0 m depth was observed upon completion. These are very short term observations and the stabilized water level may be higher. Client Burgess Engineering Inc. This till is brown to grey in colour containing some sand and trace gravel. The SPT N values ranged between and blows per 0. m penetration with most values lying between and, indicating a typically stiff to very stiff consistency. Measured moisture contents ranged between % and 0%. Gradation test results for the till are presented on the borehole logs. Glacial tills inherently contain cobbles and boulders... Groundwater Conditions No free water was encountered in Borehole BH-. A water level at. m depth was observed in open Borehole BH- upon completion of drilling. These are very short term observations and the stabilized water level may be higher. COMMENTS ON SIGN SUPPORT FOUNDATION INSTALLATION. General This section of the report presents foundation comments regarding the installation of augered caissons for the sign supports. These comments are based on the subsurface information encountered at the borehole locations. It should be anticipated that the subsurface conditions vary between and beyond the borehole locations. Design aspects of these sign supports are not part of the current scope of work and are not addressed in this letter. Client Burgess Engineering Inc. 8 . Caisson Installation Caisson installation should generally be carried out in accordance with OP 90. The Contractor is advised that variable types of subsurface materials may be encountered at the locations of the sign foundations. For additional information regarding subsurface conditions, the Contractor is referred to the Foundation Investigation Report. For bidding purposes, the Contractor shall assume the following. For subsurface conditions at an augered caisson location, reference may be made to information encountered in the borehole(s) closest to the subject caisson location. It is important to note, however, that subsurface conditions vary between and beyond the borehole locations.. Cobbles, boulders and rock fragments may be encountered within the glacial till deposits. Obstructions including rubble, cobbles and boulders may also be present within the embankment fills. The soil matrix is anticipated to become harder or denser with depth. Caisson installation equipment must be able to dislodge, handle, remove or otherwise penetrate these obstructions and hard/very dense layers.. Weathered shale with very hard interbeds will be encountered at most locations. Caisson installation equipment must be able to penetrate the shale to reach the design caisson founding level. Coring of the shale and its hard layers may be required.. The groundwater conditions observed in the boreholes are very short term. Higher groundwater levels must be expected during installation especially during the wet seasons. Soil sloughing and water seepage will occur in unsupported holes especially in sands and silts below the groundwater level. The cohesionless soils would be susceptible to disturbance under conditions of unbalanced hydrostatic head. Temporary liners must be available to support the caisson sidewalls and to provide seepage cut-off where required. Any accumulated water may have to be pumped out from the hole prior to placing concrete. Should it be impractical to remove the accumulated water inside the hole, it is recommended that the concrete be placed by the tremie method. The Contractor is responsible for constructing the sign support foundations without disturbing the material at the sides or bases of the foundations. Client Burgess Engineering Inc.
