Research and demonstration in the area of nanotechnology and packaging materials 1 TAMPERE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY (TUT) Established in 1965, started operating in the form of a foundation in 2010 The second largest university of technology in Finland ~ students, personnel ~1860 Collaborates with 250 universities around the world Department of Materials Science, Paper Converting and Packaging Technology Offers high quality teaching and research on e.g. paper and paperboard converting and technology, packaging materials and products Major fields of research include e.g. high-barrier coatings, nanoscale thin films and coatings, surface treatment and modification and biodegradable/recyclable products Well equipped with laboratory and pilot scale equipment for both research and education Contact persons: Senior Research Fellow Johanna Lahti, johanna.lahti@tut.fi Professor Jurkka Kuusipalo, jurkka.kuusipalo@tut.fi Paper Converting and Packaging Technology

Coordinator of PlasmaNice FP7 project (211473) 2 The main objective was to develop equipment for in-line atmospheric plasma deposition of functional nanoscale coatings on various fiber- and polymer-based substrates (paper, paperboard, plastic foil). The approach exploited plasma-assisted solgel coatings and coatings applied on the substrates by plasma deposition. Plasma and nanotechnology were combined in order to develop innovative multifunctional coatings with a reduced environmental impact. The project used both LCA and risk analysis to evaluate and monitor the environmental performance and the safety aspects of the new processes and products. Johanna Lahti

Demonstrator of plasma surface modification and deposition in PlasmaNice Plasma systems demonstrated at atmospheric pressure and at line speeds between ~ m/min at TUT pilot line. Plasma systems can be used to modify the surface properties of various R2R substrates and for grafting/deposition on these, e.g. papers/paperboards, laminates, plastic films, and non-wowens. Non-thermal plasmas based on atmospheric Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) are typically used for surface treatment of polymers, metals and textiles. Atmospheric Plasma Treatment (APT) equipment COST Corona and flame treatment Atmospheric Plasma Treatment (APT) Vacuum plasma 3 ADDED VALUE Ref. AFS and VITO Johanna Lahti

Partner and demonstrator in FP7 project NanoMend (280581) FP7 project Nanoscale Defect Detection, Cleaning and Repair for Large Area Substrates NanoMend is a collaborative, end user led project aimed at pioneering novel technologies for in-line detection, cleaning and repair of micro and nano scale defects on thin films deposited on large area substrates in fibre-based packaging and flexible solar panel productions. The aim is to integrate these technologies into systems that work at speeds required for continuous production, thus enabling the new technologies to improve product yield and performance, while keeping manufacturing costs low. Our role is research and demonstration relating to production of packaging materials and research of using (R2R) ALD technology in production of packaging materials. Johanna Lahti

Interesting Calls & Topics for us in Horizon NMP Calls: Nanotechnologies, Advanced materials and Production NMP NMP We are interested in both process and material development especially in the area of packaging materials and exploitation of nanotechnologies also in other applications in addition to packaging materials We are also interested in joint research in the area of nanosafety We offer our expertise as a partner and demonstrator and we are also interested in Coordination Paper Converting and Packaging Technology
