Main challenges for development 1- Environmental pollution: caused by wastewater, solid waste, hazardous wastes and noxious gas from living, production, traffic. 2- Changed hydrograph: Hau river flow reduced and unstable due to upstream s activities. 3- Climate Change (CC): -increased temperature -drought or flood -salinity intrusion -increased storms -collapsed river banks 2010/10/19 5 V. Solutions for sustainable development 1. Environment protection: raising awareness on environmental quality management; application of cleaner production; waste collection and disposal thoroughly. 2. Mekong River Protection: increasing the dialogue with stakeholders, experience sharing and learning on proper use of water resources and river protection. 3. Plan to cope with Climate Change (CC) Solutions to cope with CC: 1- Awareness improvement: IEC campaign, study and measures to cope with CC. 2- Planning: Measures to cope with CC will be included to current and future program/projects; 3- Appropriate infrastructure: versatile schools, waster supply and wastewater system, dyke network, reservoir for water of rainy season to be used for dry season. 4- Economical use of resources: water, fuel 5- Protecting public health: study and apply preventive treatment measures for water-related and rising temperature diseases 6- Livelihoods guarantee: cleaner production, research on seed and crop breeding techniques adaptable with CC. 2010/10/19 7 VII.
