Main challenges for development 1- Environmental pollution: caused by wastewater, solid waste, hazardous wastes and noxious gas from living, production, traffic. 2- Changed hydrograph: Hau river flow reduced and unstable due to upstream s activities. 3- Climate Change (CC): -increased temperature -drought or flood -salinity intrusion -increased storms -collapsed river banks 2010/10/19 5 V. Solutions for sustainable development 1. Environment protection: raising awareness on environmental quality management; application of cleaner production; waste collection and disposal thoroughly. 2. Mekong River Protection: increasing the dialogue with stakeholders, experience sharing and learning on proper use of water resources and river protection. 3. CC: Develop plans to cope with CC. 2010/10/19 6 3

Plan to cope with Climate Change (CC) Solutions to cope with CC: 1- Awareness improvement: IEC campaign, study and measures to cope with CC. 2- Planning: Measures to cope with CC will be included to current and future program/projects; 3- Appropriate infrastructure: versatile schools, waster supply and wastewater system, dyke network, reservoir for water of rainy season to be used for dry season. 4- Economical use of resources: water, fuel 5- Protecting public health: study and apply preventive treatment measures for water-related and rising temperature diseases 6- Livelihoods guarantee: cleaner production, research on seed and crop breeding techniques adaptable with CC. 2010/10/19 7 VII.
