However, the inherent variability of wind and sun may also lead to increased grid instability and operational uncertainty on isolated networks. Energy storage is key to eliminating dependence on fossil-fuel systems for power supply and power quality. Fuel consumed without BESS: 150,000 litres/week Fuel consumed with BESS: 105,000 litres/week Estimated annual fuel savings: 1,872,000 Estimated O&M savings: 150,000 Total annual savings: 2,022,000 The installation of the BESS leads to savings that significantly outstrip the operating costs of the BESS, yielding an unlevered project IRR of at least 20.4 percent and resulting in a payback time of 5 years or less. The system would primarily provide N-1 Replacement and Volatility Smoothing in parallel while also allowing for an increased use of renewable energy which would otherwise be curtailed. 5 SELECTED PROJECT GRACIOSA ISLAND AZORES, PORTUGAL 4MW POWER 3.2MWh CAPACITY AN ISLAND POWERED BY WIND AND SUN Graciosa the graceful one is the second-smallest Azorean island and has approximately 4,500 inhabitants. Inconspicuously located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, it may not seem like the starting point of a global revolution, but Graciosa is about to inaugurate a truly disruptive shift in how power is produced in remote locations around the world. The Challenge As on many islands of a similar size, diesel and other thermal engines keep their grids stable by quickly adjusting power production based on demand. To do this, they must remain online at all times. The energy produced in this way limits the share of wind and solar energy generation to 15 percent annually. Our solution We break the dependence on diesel fuel. On this Portuguese island, we are in collaboration with the Azorean power utility EDA establishing the world s first megawatt-scale grid-forming renewable energy system. The island mode capability of the fully automated battery system will enable up to 100 percent spontaneous renewable power penetration and allow the Portugese island to replace around two-thirds of its fossil-fuel generation with low-cost renewable energy. Smart system design Intelligent power controls and a purpose-built energy management system by Younicos are combined with a 4 MW/3.2 MWh battery storage system powered by lithium-ion cells, a 4.5 MW wind park and a 1 MW photovoltaic power plant. The system allows the island to be powered by wind and solar energy with the existing diesel needed only for backup power during prolonged periods of unfavourable weather. Thanks to this grid-forming battery park, the island will soon be home to the world s first renewable energy-based microgrid, which replaces expensive diesel-generated electricity with much cheaper clean energy. The resulting savings from the energy conversion will be shared between the investors and Portuguese end consumers.
