4 Training of biogas plant operators in Latvia The training of biogas plant operators in Latvia was organised by Ekodoma on 12 February 2015 in Days Hotel Riga VEF, conference room City, Brivibas street 199c, Riga, Latvia. The aim of the training event was to present and discuss the current state of biogas heat use policy in Latvia and two most promising heat use solutions heat for drying purposes and opportunities for ORC technology. Original invitation letter and agenda of the workshop is provided in Annex 1. In total 56 people attended the event and included biogas plant operators, academia, technology providers, representatives of authorities and associations. Besides participants from Latvia, several people from Lithuania and also from the Check Republic joined the training event. Workshop was divided into three parts. In the introduction Ilze Dzene (Ekodoma) presented BiogasHeat project and main lessons learned. The head of the Latvian Biogas Association Mr. Andis Kārkliņš continued with the updates of biogas sector and policy trends in Latvia. The introduction part was concluded by presentation of Inspecta Latvia (the auditing company) about experience and conclusions after implementation of heat use audits in biogas plants in Latvia in In the second part of the workshop heat use for drying processes was discussed. In this session the need for wood fuel drying in energy production was presented by the Professor Ivars Veidenbergs from Riga Technical University, and followed by presentations of drying technology providers drying in containers (ZS Vecsiljāņi), belt dryers, grain dryers (Baltic Sales Agency) and compact hay dryers (AGRERA). The third part of the workshop focused on heat use for ORC technologies. General aspects of ORC technologies were introduced by Mr. Edgars Vīgants (Balteneko). Presentation about ORC modules appropriate for using them in biogas plants with an calculation example was given by Czech company representative B:Power who is an ORC technology provider in Europe. The session was concluded by presentation of a BiogasHeat case study on evaluation of ORC use options for a field test biogas plant in Croatia. The presentation was given by Mr. Jānis Ikaunieks (Ekodoma). The agenda of the workshop is provided in a table below. Questions were related to the advancement of legal procedures for challenging renewable electricity tax payment claims in court and about new developments of the biofuels regulation. The heat use auditing specialist from Inspecta Latvia has been asked about his opinion on what are the best solutions for heat use of biogas plants in Latvia. Professor Ivars Veidenbergs were asked to explain the costs of wood drying compared to the economics of flue gas condenser installation. Drying technology providers responded to mostly technical questions about capacity, duration of the drying, construction of the installation and how appropriate/adaptable they are to the variety of loose product drying. ORC presentations raised questions about costs, legal aspects of the ORC installation in an existing biogas plant. The presentation of Ekodoma about case study in Croatia with ORC February, EKODOMA

8 installation options in biogas plant was very much appreciated, since the presented option would allow operators to use less feedstock for the same amount of energy production. In general the training event was evaluated positively. Some biogas plant operators asked if there will be something similar organised in the future. February, EKODOMA
