2 Decade of Action on Road Safety Global Plan UN GA Resolution 64/255 of 2 March 2010 on Improving Road Safety Proclaimed the period as the Decade of Action for Road Safety Goal is to stabilize and then reduce the forecast level of road traffic fatalities around the world by increasing activities conducted at the national, regional and global levels

4 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Transport 2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Transport was not part of the MDGs framework for The transport community considered this as a missed opportunity in view of the strong linkage between economic development and transport.

5 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Transport With the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) recently adopted, transport is given another opportunity to profile as a key sector contributing to sustainable development and climate change goals from now until Sustainable transport is not represented by a distinct goal within the SDG framework - transport is mainstreamed into many of the SDGs which underscores the importance of transport as a critical enabler of other sectors achievements

6 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Transport The SDG framework includes five targets that are directly related to transport Additionally, transport is enabling achievement in other sector s targets such as rural investment (target 2.1, 2.a), air pollution (target 3.9), access to drinking water (target 6.1), reduction of food loss (target 12.3) and climate change adaptation and mitigation (target 13.1)

7 Post-2015 Development Agenda Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Transport Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages Target 3.6: By 2020, halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents

8 Post-2015 Development Agenda Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Transport Goal 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable Target 11.2: By 2030, provide access to safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all, improving road safety, notably by expanding public transport, with special attention to the needs of those in vulnerable situations, women, children, persons with disabilities and older persons

9 Brasilia Declaration Recommended Actions The second Global High-Level Conference on Road Safety, held in Brasilia on 18 and 19 November 2015 adopted the Brasilia Declaration which mapped a way forward for global road safety that reconciled the Decade of Action and the SDGs through the Brasilia Declaration The General Assembly Resolution 70/260 of 15 April 2016 endorsed the Brasilia Declaration. The Declaration include 7 areas of recommended actions

10 Brasilia Declaration Recommended Actions 1. Strengthening road safety management and improving legislation and enforcement (Pillar 1 Road safety management); 2. Promote safer roads and the use of sustainable modes of transportation (Pillar 2 Safer roads and mobility, but enlarged to include sustainability); 3. Protect vulnerable road users (Pillar 4 Safer road users, with greater emphasis vulnerable road users); 4. Develop and promote the use of safer vehicles (Pillar 3 Safer vehicles); 5. Increase awareness and build capacity of road users (Pillar 4, Safer road users); 6. Improve post-crash response and rehabilitation services (Pillar 5, Post-crash response); 7. Strengthen cooperation and coordination towards global road safety (International activities).
