7 Resource Scarcity Impact of unsustainable use Developed nations are three-planet-living 300% global predicted increase in demand for natural resources by 2050 Critical resources mined from virgin sources are running out: Indium (LCD screens): <10 years; Silver (industrial catalyst): <30 years; Zinc (construction steels): <40 years. Mined in areas of water scarcity

8 Resource Scarcity Peak Oil Using 5.5 million barrels of oil/hr. Peak oil production by Oil costs will rise steadily as reserves decline.

Almost all Scottish Public Bodies have a Carbon Management Plan (~150) Key step to meet the Duties under the Climate Change (Scotland) Act Key components of a Carbon Management Plan: Carbon baseline [carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions] Carbon reduction target Project plan to meet target Governance and reporting

26 Your Carbon Management Plan Aim is for use, not shelf-filler Above all it s a manual for CM in your organisation relevant and bespoke Keep it simple (detail in appendices, graphics) Make it attractive & personal (graphics, photos) Consider what needs minimal or no regular updating Policy Drivers Baseline and (possibly) target and what does need regular/annual updating

Leasing of equipment (warranty for repair) Buy refurbished or repaired goods Buy goods with recycled content When procuring goods always consider best achievable energy & water efficiency using life cycle costing
