1 National Conference on ENERGY SECURITY FOR RURAL DEVELOPMENT [ESRD-2009] REC, GRU Sponsored by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy & University Grants Commission Organized by Rural Energy Centre Gandhigram Rural University Gandhigram Dindigul Tamilnadu

2 GRU: Gandhigram was born in A team of dedicated disciples and contemporaries of Mahatma Gandhiji, Dr.T.S.Soundaram and Dr.G.Ramachandran, developed Gandhigram, the home of many rural development programmes. The Gandhigram Rural Institute (GRI) was founded in 1956 with undying faith and deep devotion to Mahatma Gandhi s revolutionary concept of Nai Talim system of education. The dimension of research and extension were added to teaching during the course of time. This threedimensional approach became a pioneering model which earned appreciation from all over the country. The work of the Institute invited national attention and the Government of India (Ministry of Education), on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission, conferred the status of a Deemed University on the Institute under Section (3) of the UGC Act of 1956, on 3rd August, The University was accredited with Five Star Status by NAAC, in February About Rural Energy Centre: Rural Energy Centre (REC) of Gandhigram Rural University was set up in The Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources (MNES), Government of India has sanctioned Rs.4.25 lakhs to set up the Renewable Energy Park (REP) at Gandhigram Rural University, Gandhigram with the following vision and mission. Vision To become a Center of Excellence in teaching, research & extension in energy area for sustainable rural development Mission To establish a model energy village with renewable energy & energy conservation technologies. Objectives Centre of Excellence in Academic activities Research, Design, Development and Deployment of energy technologies for rural areas. Educate the public, students and practitioners on renewable energy & energy conservation Carryout consultancy assignment in connection with Energy Auditing, Energy Management & Energy Education in different sectors. Asses the availability of the energy resources in rural areas. Undertaking renewable energy & energy conservation projects from MNRE, TEDA, DRDA, IREDA, PCRA, UNDP etc.,

3 About the Conference: Access to quality, reliable and affordable energy is critical for promoting economic and social development in rural areas. The energy situation in rural India is characterized by low quality of fuel, low efficiency of use, low reliability of supply and limited access leading to lower productivity of land, water and human effort, ultimately leading to low quality of life and environmental degradation. First, dependence on biomass (fuelwood, crop residue and cattle dung) and traditional cook stoves with low efficiency which emit smoke into kitchen, leads to low quality of life for most rural women. Secondly, dependence on kerosene and wick lamps for lighting with uncertain supply of the fuel leads to low quality and intermittent lighting. Thirdly, dependence on centralized grid electricity supply to low-load rural situations is characterized by fluctuating voltage, unreliable supply and shortage of power in most parts of rural India. Dependence on coal-based electric power plants (accounting for 70% of power generation) is leading to environmental degradation; local (land degradation), regional (air, water and soil pollution) and global (greenhouse gas buildup leading to climate change). There is a realization on the need to search for decentralized and renewable energy-based options to meet the rural energy needs in a sustainable way. Thus this conference will create a platform to discuss the issues related to energy security and rural development among the researchers, students and policy makers. Objectives of the Conference: 1. To develop appropriate energy planning models for sustainable rural development 2. Role of Renewable Energy for habitat development 3. Energy Conservation & Energy Efficiency improvement in Rural Industries. Conference Themes: Indian Energy Scenario Rural Energy Planning Energy Policy and advice schemes. Application of Solar Energy, Wind Energy, Bio Energy for rural development Energy conservation opportunities in rural industries CHP (Combined Heat and Power) applications. Renewable Energy Sources
