2 FILMTEC Membranes Warranty Evaluation & DIRECTOR Services Membrane Element Analysis This Membrane Element Analysis is provided for your convenience as part of Warranty Evaluation and DIRECTOR SM Services. Within this package you will find complete instructions for sending an element for analysis, including labeling, packaging, ordering, and shipping. FilmTec Corporation 1 offers membrane element testing services for performance checking and troubleshooting purposes to validate a warranty claim for your reverse osmosis or nanofiltration system. For warranty evaluation: FILMTEC TM elements will be analyzed to check the validity of a warranty claim, in which case the analysis will be free of charge. If the return elements are proven defective, replacements or credit will be issued in accordance with the relevant warranty information bulletin. Elements not found defective will be returned to the buyer freight collect, followed by a written report. If destructive testing is necessary for warranty verification, the customer will be contacted for autopsy approval. In case the claim is rejected, further analysis can be offered to determine the cause of failure. In this case, the analysis will be charged according to the DIRECTOR Services price list. 1 FilmTec Corporation is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company Page 2 of 10 * Trademark of The Dow Chemical Company Form

4 For DIRECTOR Services: FilmTec Corporation offers membrane element testing services to its customers for a nominal fee. FILMTEC elements can be tested to determine their suitability for continued operation or to troubleshoot problems in your reverse osmosis or nanofiltration system. In addition to test results, you will receive a complete report with a description of the tests performed and the implications of the test results on your operation. The following information included in this package will help you initiate the element testing process: DIRECTOR Services Price Sheet Available Testing Services for Membrane Elements DIRECTOR Services Request Form (including the CEI form) FILMTEC Membranes DIRECTOR Services Price Sheet Standard test packages Packages Service Package 1 Recommended for large membrane systems for which a complete element analysis is needed (Physical inspection, Element probing, Performance testing, Element autopsy, Surface analysis by ICP (inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy)) Service Package 2 Recommended for membrane systems for which an analysis of membrane condition or mode of failure is needed (Physical inspection, Performance testing, Element autopsy) Service Package 3 Recommended for Home Drinking Water elements (Physical inspection, Element autopsy) Additional Services Available: Price per Sample (U.S. dollars) $1, $ $ Cleaning Evaluation (in combination with any of the above packages) $ Oxidative Testing by ESCA (Electron Spectroscopy for $ Chemical Analysis) X-ray Evaluation for up to 4 samples $ Water Analysis $ Service notes: Pricing is valid for FILMTEC elements. 5 Available Testing Services For DIRECTOR Services FilmTec Corporation offers membrane element testing services to its customers for a nominal fee. FILMTEC elements can be tested to determine suitability for continued operation or to troubleshoot problems in your reverse osmosis or nanofiltration system. The following testing services are available: Physical Inspection of Element: This is a non-destructive test to observe the physical integrity of the element and visually identify potential foulants. This test is used to help the technician determine what steps to take in fully analyzing element performance. All elements are visually inspected noting any differences from a new product. Performance Testing: A performance test is highly recommended before an autopsy is performed, although not required. This is a non-destructive test, used to determine how the element is performing at standard test conditions. This test determines element operating performance, with a comparison of typical properties and original production test data (when available, not applicable to dry product). Cleaning Recommendations: Evaluation of the visual inspection, as well as the performance test, indicates to the technician what type of cleaning is likely to be most effective. If the first cleaning is unsuccessful, further cleanings can be instituted using different chemicals to improve performance. A performance test is run after each cleaning to evaluate the degree of success. Price for cleaning evaluation includes one cleaning cycle and one performance test and does not apply to each cleaning procedure. Element Autopsy: A destructive test, an autopsy requires the element to be cut lengthwise to allow the membrane to be unrolled. The element is unrolled carefully so as to not damage the membrane surface. The surface is fully examined and sprayed with cleaning chemicals to check for reaction. Oxidative Testing: Dye Test/Fujiwara A dye test or Fujiwara test can be performed to determine if the membrane has been oxidized. A dye test requires dropping a small quantity of a dye solution on the membrane surface. The dye will adhere readily to support material that has been oxidized, due to damage in the membrane barrier layer. These damaged areas will appear as bright pink spots. The dye will not adhere to undamaged membrane. A Fujiwara test involves a test solution of pyridine and sodium hydroxide in which small coupons of membrane are put in the solution and heated. A positive response is indicated by a red or pink color in the pyridine layer, indicating that the membrane has been oxidized by chlorine or halogens. These are destructive tests. Oxidative Testing: ESCA (Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis): This test identifies impurities organically bound to the membrane surface. It is predominantly used to identify the source of oxidation and is a destructive test. Because the composition of the membrane is known, anything else remaining on the surface indicates that oxidation of the membrane has occurred. This is a more thorough test than the oxidative dye test or Fujiwara, and therefore, requires a longer lead time. Analytical Testing: This is a destructive test. Two types of analytical testing can be done including inorganic testing, such as Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) Emission Spectroscopy, which helps identify specific metals on the membrane surface, as well as silica testing. Organic Testing is measured by Total Organic Carbon (TOC) readings from foulants extracted from the surface. Organic Testing is used only for total TOC count. Specific organics cannot be identified. Water Analysis: A full water analysis is available with specific breakdown and balance of cations/anions, ph, silica, metals, and TOC counts. Water samples must be sent in proper containers. Additional tests are available, based on your specific needs. Please contact your Dow Representative for pricing and availability. Page 5 of 10 * Trademark of The Dow Chemical Company Form
