Why Worry About Stormwater? Stormwater discharges are generated as a result of runoff from impermeable areas such as building rooftops and paved areas during rainfall and snow events. This runoff may contain pollutants that could affect water quality. The following steps provide methods and procedures to control the quality of storm water discharge

Storm Water Terms Defined Industrial Activity is defined as any manufacturing, processing or raw material storage areas at an industrial plant. Stormwater Outfalls are defined as the point where stormwater runoff leaves the facility property boundary. Receiving Water is defined as the water body where stormwater eventually goes when it leaves the worksite. This could be a stream, river, lake or even the ocean

What Does Eaton Require? Newbern must be managed in a way that protects stormwater runoff from unnecessary sources of contamination. Stormwater Pollution Prevention Management is a continuous PROCESS

Identify Industrial Activities Site operations must be inspected to identify locations where industrial activities are exposed to storm water. Examples at Eaton facilities: Metal chip hoppers Outdoor drum storage Industrial waste containers 5 5 5

Identify Industrial Activities (Cont d) Examples at Eaton facilities: Dust collectors Particulate emissions on roof Obsolete equipment storage Leakage from scrap dumpsters 6 6 6

Identify Industrial Activities (Cont d) Examples at Eaton facilities: Chemical storage areas Loading and unloading areas Fork lift tracking pollutants between buildings Waste storage areas 7 7 7

Identify Industrial Activities (Cont d) Site operations must also be inspected to make certain that sediment and soil erosion, especially during construction projects, are not affecting stormwater quality

Identify Industrial Activities (Cont d) Facility operations should also be inspected to eliminate all unpermitted non-storm water discharges that could affect storm water quality. Nonstorm water discharges could include: Process wastewater discharging to floor drains connected to storm sewer Boiler blowdown to the exterior of the building Air compressor condensate Vehicle washing Plant hose down to storm drains 9 9 9

Mitigate by Eliminating the Activity The best way to control the quality of storm water is to eliminate areas of industrial activity. Methods to eliminate exposure include: Move the source to an indoor location (drums, old equipment) Install awnings, lean-to buildings, etc. Cover the source (dumpsters)

Mitigate by Controls If not possible to eliminate industrial activities from exposure to storm water, then controls must be put in place to ensure quality of storm water. Control methods are grouped into the following methods: Management Controls Structural Controls

Housekeeping Good housekeeping is an inexpensive, yet very efficient way to control storm water quality. Storm drains should be kept free and clear of all debris that can clog drains. Dry sweeping should be performed in leiu of hose down

Employee Training Stormwater training should be provided to all employees who could have an affect on the quality of storm water discharge. Training should be provided for all new employees upon being hired and annually thereafter

Why is water use and wastewater important? The water we use and then return to the environment can affect Human health Ecosystems Water availability for human or environmental use 14 14

Definitions Water Source: includes all water coming into a plant from municipal or other third party water supply and on-site/off-site wells Wastewater Source: includes all waters at the site destined for disposal including process wastewater, non-contact cooling water, wash-up water and sanitary (domestic) sources. Wastewater is sent to the sewer

What Does Eaton Require? Newbern must be managed in a way that assures compliance with all regulatory requirements AND minimizes the impact of water releases to the community and the environment

Wastewater Pollutants Wastewater discharge can be negatively affected by the following materials: Oils / greases Flammable chemicals Chemicals with high or low ph Any material in high quantities 17 17

Wastewater Pollution Prevention Do not dump anything down a drain. Call for assistance when disposing of chemicals. Report equipment leaks to your front line leader
