7 As per the Deccan Herald article (June 23rd, 2010),Karnataka Pllutin Cntrl Bard say that the lull in mnsn activities in Bangalre has caused an alarming increase in atmspheric pllutin. The suspended particulate matter in certain areas f the city is reaching clse t 500 mg per cubic meter (mg/m3), whereas it shuld nt exceed 140 mg/m3.

8 Accrding t the survey carried ut by On 18/11/2009, the 8 mst plluted cities in India are: Sukinda, Orissa with a large number f pen cast chrmite re mines. Vapi, Gujarat, severe levels f mercury in the city's grundwater are reprtedly 96 times higher than WHO safety levels. Mandi Gbindgarh, Punjab with its irn and steel factries. Lucknw, UP, with its numerus Industrial units and vehicular pllutin. Raipur, Chattisgarh, with its severe dust and smke particulates due t Industrial pllutin. Ludhiana, Punjab, with its several knitwear and ther factries. Kanpur, UP with pllutin frm wastes f numerus industries and tanneries in and arund the city Faridabad, Haryana with its numerus Industrial units, brick kilns and vehicular pllutin.

9 SOME SHOCKING STATISTICS The amunt f wd and paper we thrw away each year is enugh t heat 50 millin hmes fr 20 years percent f all fresh water n Earth is in icecaps and glaciers. Each galln f gas used by a car cntributes abut 19 tns f CO2 int the atmsphere. Fr a single car driving 1,000 miles a mnth, that adds up t 220 tns f CO2 a year. A single plystyrene (Styrfam) cup cntains ne billin mlecules f CFCs that s 1,000,000,000,000,000,000.

10 Each year, 1 millin sea birds, 100,000 marine mammals, and 50,000 fur seals are killed as the result f eating r being strangled in plastic. Eighty-fur percent f a typical husehld s waste including fd scraps, yard waste, paper, cardbard, cans, and bttles can be recycled. Each year, 40 millin acres f trpical rainfrests are destryed thrugh lgging r burning. Only 10 percent f the 35,000 pesticides intrduced since 1945 have been tested fr their effects n peple. Envirnment pllutin is ne f the mst cmpelling eclgical crisis t which we are subjected t tday, with far reaching cnsequences; hence awareness n envirnmental pllutin and its remedial measures has gained paramunt imprtance in tday s milieu.

13 Pllutin cntrl measures by adlescents: Sme pllutin cntrl measures which culd be undertaken by adlescents are: Drive Smart! Take public transprt, walk, r bicycle when yu can. Replace incandescent light bulbs with cmpact flurescent bulbs, as they use abut a quarter f electricity and last ten times lnger. Plant a Tree, prtect a frest. Prtecting frests is a big step n the rad t curbing glbal warming. Reduce! Reuse! Recycle! Prducing new paper, glass, and metal prducts frm recycled materials saves 70 t 90 percent f energy and pllutin

Implementatin f Waste minimizatin techniques and adptin f apprpriate pllutin cntrl measures. Spreading Awareness messages thrugh prgrams fr the prspective and existing entrepreneurs n usage f cleaner technlgies and pllutin cntrl. Encurage Cmmn Effluent Treatment Plant.

16 Pssible Future Appraches t cleaning up pllutin: After a decade f research, scientists in the early twentyfirst century fund that hundreds f species f plants, alng with the fungi and bacteria that inhabit the ecsystem arund their rts, seek ut and ften break dwn chemical mlecules that can harm mst ther life. Fr example, there are: v sunflwers that capture uranium, v ferns that thrive n arsenic, v clvers that eat il, v pplar trees that destry dry-cleaning slvents. Research int using plants as pllutin spnges is being cntinued, but early reprts f their helping t clean up pllutin are prmising.
