1 REPORT ON THE CELEBRATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE PRESERVATION OF OZONE LAYER ASMARA, ERITREA (16 TH SEPTEMBER 2015) DATE 18/09/2015 VENU: CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HALL TIME: 8:00-11:30 NUMBER OF PARTICAPNTS: 75 INTRODUCTION Eritrea has been commemorating the Ozone Layer 16, September 2015 for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer ever since it became party to both the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol in This year 16 September 2015 was celebrated nationally for the 11 th time. A seminar was organized The Ozone day was colorfully commemorated with various activities under the theme 30 Years of Healing the Ozone Together. Objective Ozone day is always taken as a good opportunity to make use of the resource for Public sensitization through various communication media. This is to ensure that key stakeholders including the general public, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning technicians, Customs officer and other partners are aware about the efforts that Eritrea is undertaking with regards to the implementation of the Montreal Protocol, issue of Ozone layer depletion and its impact on public health and environment, Summary of the Planned Activities Welcome speech by Director General Key note speech by H.E, Minister Tesfai G. slasssie Summary of work on the implementation of the Montreal Protocol by National Ozone Officer, Mr. Kibrom Asmerom. Award of certificates to RAC technicians by H.E Exhibition

2 MAJORE ACTIVITIES FOR THE CELEBRATION OF THE OZONE LAYER 1.0 Introduction: To mark the 30th anniversary of Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, Eritrea through the Department of Environment of the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment has organized a seminar with various activities. The half day seminar was attended by H.E Tesfai G.Selassie, Minister of Ministry of Land, Water and Environment and the Director General of the Department of Environment, Mr. Mogos Woldeyohannes. The Seminar mainly included:- exhibition of refrigeration tools and Equipments, posters, key notes by H.E Minister: Ministry of Land, Water and Environment and Director General of the Department, Summary presentation by the National Ozone Officer on Montreal Protocol, Ozone depletion and it health and Environmental effects, of the work accomplished by Eritrea on the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol and future plans. Award of certificates to refrigeration and Air-conditioning technicians. The Presentation made by the National Ozone Officer mainly addressed introduction about the Vienna Convention and it Montreal Protocol, Ozone and its natural balance and the mechanism how the ozone absorb the UV-ray from reaching the earth, phenomena of ozone depletion and formation of ozone hole and the associated human health and environment from the adverse effects of UV-lights. Moreover the international effort and the recovery of the ozone hole and the prediction for the full recovery back the 1970s level were explained. Similarly the Eritrea s Efforts so far made for the effective implementation of the Montreal protocol was also described in brief. At the conclusion Eritrea s future plan and the role of each sector in the control of the import and use of ODSs was highlighted.

3 Exhibition: as part of the ozone day celebration, exhibition of refrigeration and air-conditioning tools and equipments were displayed on the meeting venue for the participant and explanation was given by the RAC technicians. Some of the tools and equipments displayed include Vacuum Pump, Refrigerant Recovery Unit, refrigerant recycling machine, leak detector manifold etc. As part of this exhibition posters were also prepared and displayed. The Posters mainly address, equipment that use ODS, health and environmental effects of ODS, Posters containing the THEM and Slogan of the ozone day, Ozone hole healing and full recovery prediction, Ozone depletion process, zone layer (good ozone) and Bad ozone. Certificate award:- It is to be noted that in December 2014 in collaboration with UNEP regional office in Nairobi, training was given to refrigeration and air - conditioning technicians both from the private and public sectors. Twenty-four technicians attended the training and all trainees comply with level of knowledge required by the European standards of certification and are certified with European standards certification. On the occasion of the Ozone day H.E Minter Tesfai G.Selassie handed certificated to the technicians. In his address he stressed the role of each sector in the protection of the use ODS and calls each sector to live-up to the expectation. Attendance The Workshop was attended from various institutions including the refrigeration and air conditioning sectors (Asmara Brewery, Asmara Milk factory, Massawa Fish Processing, Port of Massawa, Massawa Airport, and Importers and Industry other private institutions), local NGO and CBOs ( National Eritrean Youth and Students, National Eritrea Women Association, National Confederation of Eritrean Work Association, Eritrean Chamber of Commerce, Farmers Association), Government institution, Ministry of Trade and Industry, Customs Office, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Water

4 Resource, Department, Department of Meteorology, Ministry of local Government, Ministry of Information, Forest and Wildlife Authority. 80 participant attended the workshop.
