The Niagara River Mussel Biomonitoring Program April 10, 2013 Niagara River implementers Workshop

Historical Context Niagara River Toxics Committee Report: Identified sources of toxic chemicals Documented environmental conditions in water, sediment and biota Inventory of 261 chemicals 1987: Niagara River Declaration of Intent and Work Plan Niagara River Toxics Management Plan 2

NRTMP Work Plan Source Reduction Point sources Hazardous waste sites Ambient Monitoring Upstream/downstream program Biomonitoring Tributary screening and trackdown Public Information Annual reports and meetings 3

EMRB: Biomonitoring Programs Caged Mussel, (SPMDs, indigenous mussel) monitoring Young of the Year fish monitoring Sport fish contaminant monitoring 4

Objectives: Mussels/SPMDs Identify contaminant presence/absence Identify sources and source areas Spatially compare the relative contribution of contaminants to the river from sources Assess the success of remedial activities 5

Methods: Elliptio complanata - collected from Balsam Lake (south central Ontario) Mussels are deployed in cages on the U.S. and Canadian side of the river for three weeks Mussels are retrieved and shucked 6

Methods: Semi Permeable Monitoring Devices (SPMD) 7

Canadian Sites Mussels: Trace concentrations of PCBs and pp DDE on occasion Sediment: pp DDE and pp DDD detected in sediment from Millers Creek trace concentrations of β-hexachlorocyclohexane and γ- chlordane in Bakers Creek 21

PCBs: 2012 Caged Mussel Data 600 Total PCBs (ng/g dry wt)

SPMD Results Spatial contaminant patterns generally consistent with mussels SPMDs detected compounds not previously measured in mussels e.g. aldrin, endrin, dieldrin, endosulphan I & II, methoxychlor and heptachlor Good agreement between estimated contaminant concentrations using SPMDs at NOTL with EC upstream/downstream water quality data 23

Conclusions Mussel and SPMD data have not identified Canadian sources of organic contaminants to the Niagara River Trace concentrations of p p-dde were present in tributaries throughout the NR watershed Decreasing contaminant trends at some remediated US sites e.g. Gill Ck (PCBs), Pettit Flume and 102nd St. hazardous waste site (tetra, penta, hexa-chlorinated benzene) 24

Conclusions Continue to monitor ongoing sources: Chlorinated benzenes: Bloody Run Creek; Occidental Chemical Co. Mirex: Occidental Chemical Co; 102 nd St.; LNR OC pesticide (lindane), tri-chlorobenzenes and HCBD: Gill Creek PCBs: Two Mile Creek; Gill Creek Dioxins and furans: Pettit Flume, Bloody Run Creek 25
