Solar Gard Solar Gard is a trusted name in window films, photovoltaics and custom coatings. With more than 30 years experience in our field, our products are sold in more than 90 countries and touch millions of people every day. Window Films Photovoltaics Custom Coatings & Extruded Films

Protect. Save. Renew. Protect. Save. Renew. Window films protect skin and interiors from UV damage and from the dangers associated with broken glass Custom coatings provide clean surfaces in healthcare applications Photovoltaic backsheets protect solar modules and maintain integrity Window films save building owners energy, carbon and money Custom coatings are used in medical diagnostics which save patients lives Photovoltaics save the earth s natural resources, replacing fossil fuel energy sources with solar power Window films renew older construction by improving the performance of existing glazing to provide energy savings and environmental sustainability, better safety and security and by improving aesthetics Photovoltaics, solar reflectors and concentrators are key components in the renewable energy market Smart solutions that positively impact lives.

What does Solar Gard window film do? Solar Gard window films save energy and improve comfort by controlling the flow of solar and terrestrial energy (right top). Solar control (right bottom) is achieved by rejecting most UV and NIR radiation from sun while allowing as much light as possible to pass through. FIR control (below) is achieved with a low emissivity coating which minimizes the absorption and emission of FIR radiation acting as an insulator.

What does Solar Gard want from you? Solar Gard is looking to demonstrate benefits of window film in a creative, quantifiable way. The next slides will show some examples, but feel free to think outside of the box, keeping the following improvement areas in mind: Comfort improvement: Quantify the increased comfort zone in a space after the installation of window film Energy savings: Quantify the HVAC load reductions after the installation of window film and the low carbon footprint of window film. Cost savings: Quantify the cost savings and potential payback time of window film due to reduced HVAC loads

Project advisor: Jan Kleissl Project E7: Model home study Action Items: Retrofit the model buildings in the lab with windows, metered HVAC system, and network of internal temperature sensors Monitor local meteorological conditions Leave side by side for at least 1 week as a control to see how buildings compare Film 1 or more buildings and leave outside for several weeks Transfer meteorological measurements and building information to project 2. Deliverables: Comparison of buildings before installation for calibration Reduction in heating load and cooling load after film application, normalized by weather conditions Improvement in comfort zone based on internal temperature sensor network Scale results up to full home and/or commercial building results $$ Savings annually of scaled results BONUS: Provide video/photos for potential marketing piece

Project advisor: Jan Kleissl Project E8: Comfort improvement survey Action Items Select several pairs of comparable offices or classrooms across campus with potential heating/cooling problems. Deploy air and globe temperatures at all locations and survey occupants for at least 2 weeks. Film 1 of each pair and continue measurements and surveys for at least 2 weeks. Record local meteorological conditions Deliverables Report on relationship between occupant comfort, interior conditions, and exterior conditions. Report on changes in occupant comfort after the application of window film Rank the locations as far as benefits of window film and comment as to why locations are ranked as such. BONUS: Provide video/photos for potential marketing piece

Project advisor: Jan Kleissl Project E9: Temperature reduction study of all Solar Gard films Action items Develop a testing method for temperature reduction of window film. (For example, a filmed glass cube exposed to a heat lamp, but get creative and detailed!) Test all Solar Gard solar control and Low E films Become familiar with published and industry accepted terms (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, U-Value, etc.) Deliverables Report and rank results of all films Compare results to industry accepted film specs and report on any surprises Comment on testing method and suggest future ways of quantifying temperature reduction or comfort improvement. BONUS: Provide video/photos for potential marketing piece
