3 Demonstrate that commingled source separated organics can be collected in trucks used for yard waste and processed at a yard waste site. Commingled collection and processing of these materials will improve the overall economics of SSO management. Processing the organics at a yard waste site can be accomplished without any significant environmental impacts. Project Goals

4 Project Timeline In 2006 Carver County received a $40,000 Grant from the MPCA to conduct the organics project. March 2007 the MPCA granted approval to begin the Demonstration/Research Project. April 2007 Waste Management began collecting organics from 600 homes on Monday and Wednesday yard waste routes in the cities of Chanhassen, Chaska, Waconia and Watertown and delivered to the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum yard waste site in Chanhassen. July 2007 MPCA increase grant funding by $15,000 to allow for expanded collection in winter months. August 2007 MPCA amended demonstration agreement to added organics from commercial sources. September 2007 MPCA granted permission to accept test loads from Hennepin County schools and City of Wayzata organics routes. In 2008 Carver County expanded the program to included 4 new cities and a commercial route

7 Participant Survey The Survey had a 38% response rate 87% Currently throw out food scraps in their trash 64% use a garbage disposal for disposing of food scraps 19% use backyard composting bins 83% are willing to use bio-degradable bags 89% Think household organics separation and collection is a good way to recycle more waste

9 Biodegradable Bags Available in Local Stores Residents in the program can no longer use plastic bags. Bag-To-Nature, and Kraft bags are ASTMD 6400 certified and approved for project and available in stores are bags.

10 Residential Organics Collection 1) Collect food scraps and food-soiled paper in kitchen pail or other container. 2) Empty kitchen scraps and yard waste in cart.

11 Residential Organics Collection (Continued) 3) Set out yard waste cart at curb along side trash and recycling for collection. Residents are offered 90, 60, or 30 gallon carts

12 Hauling Economics Collection cost savings by eliminating a second cart for organics, eliminating the cost for a second truck. ($85.00 per hour to operate a truck) Decrease transportation cost by utilizing local sites and eliminating long hauls and transferring material. (Transferring cost is $15.00 ton) Haulers gain a competitive edge by offering organics collection.

14 Operational Plan SITE CAPACITY - Up to 20,000 cubic yards of material may be actively composting or stored at site at any given time. LITTER MANAGEMENT- Good housekeeping practices are regularly employed to remove accumulation of debris. ODORS - Odor generation is minimized through quickly and efficiently processing the incoming materials, good housekeeping and maintaining aerobic conditions in static piles.

15 Preparation of Site Installation of Visual Screening This berm is located on the north side to screen the site from HWY 5. Trees were planted for added height.

16 Organics Arrive at Site Waste Management delivers organics/yard waste to the site using both side load and rear load trucks. Material is sorted to remove contamination (mainly plastic bags)

19 Compost Processing After sorting, the organics are fed into the Supreme 300 mixer to blend the feedstock. The organics are thoroughly blended prior to adding them to a stockpile.

20 Static Pile Material collected each week from Wednesday and Friday routes are combined and placed in a pile for monitoring. Once a pile meets the MPCA s guidelines regarding the Process to Further Reduce Pathogens (PFRP) it is combined in a static pile with previous weeks materials.

22 Water Sampling Weather and Rainfall are Recorded Water Samples taken after a major rain event Samples are tested for the following parameters: carbon/nitrogen ratio, ph, NPK, Soluble salts, heavy metals

23 Screening Finished Compost is screened and tested following the criteria outlined in subp.6. RW Farms utilizes a CEC Screen with a 5-foot by 12-foot deck.

24 The Finished Product The Arboretum has the opportunity to utilize finished compost. Remaining compost will be sold to local landscape operations or land applied by RW Farms.

29 US WOMEN S OPEN Collection containers were grouped in areas where trashed was generated around the course. Containers were placed adjacent to concession stands. Kitchen staff collected organics. Front end load containers were utilized to consolidate organics.

30 Residential Drop-off off Program

31 Hennepin County Organics originated from the Wayzata and Minnetonka residential programs as well as the public school programs. The loads were put through a shredder and then a mixer while the other two were put through just the mixer.
