1 Innovations in NORM Management

2 Finding the best solution We understand the challenges industries face when selecting the right management solution for Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM). It s a highly regulated area that requires a specialist approach. We have extensive experience in treating and disposing of NORM and guarantee it is removed in a safe and secure way that is not harmful to the environment. 4 NORM Monitoring and Analysis To find the optimum solution for NORM waste, we first need to identify which radionuclides are present and their level of radioactivity. We also need to know whether contaminants are soluble or insoluble. To help us do this we have mobile NORM monitoring and analytical apparatus. Treatment Innovations for NORM Contaminated Water For industries that produce large volumes of water contaminated with NORM, finding a cost effective and environmentally sound waste management solution can be a challenge. By harnessing the latest technology, we can provide an efficient way of managing wastewater containing both soluble or suspended NORM solids. The unit is easily transportable, which makes it suitable for use in remote field locations. The apparatus will characterise, monitor and analyse NORM on site, quickly and effectively. Results can be shared with you immediately, rather than incurring a delay while samples are sent off to a laboratory. ACTIFLO Separating NORM solids from water Our ACTIFLO technology is suitable for industries with significant volumes of NORM wastewater. It provides efficient solids separation with a small footprint. ACTIFLO is currently being used successfully in both onshore and offshore operations globally, for our clients in the Oil & Gas industry and is widely used in other sectors. ACTIFLO works by using a combination of tilted plates and recirculating micro sand media. This micro sand moves around the ACTIFLO unit to help the formation of solid particles, which then drop out in the tilted plates. This micro sand is recovered and reused, making the process highly efficient. The units are designed for sites with high flow rates and have the capacity to treat millions of litres an hour. To ensure optimum efficiency, we size the ACTIFLO unit to suit every application. METCLEAN The latest solution for the removal of soluble NORM Metclean uses the latest technology for removing soluble NORM from wastewater. It works by forming either an iron or manganese micro solid depending on the contaminants in the water. As the water flows through the system, the radioactive particles are absorbed by the micro solid. This is then filtered out and sent for disposal as a concentrated sludge. The clean water is extracted and radioactivity is reduced to safe and reusable levels. Call: or hazenquiries@veolia.co.uk

5 Specialist services Veolia offers a complete cleaning service for NORM contaminated equipment including vessels, tanks and pipework on and offshore. We recognise that specialist equipment requires specialist waste management. Our team of experts will work with you to develop a bespoke solution that ensures all complexities are catered for and the process is as efficient and sustainable as possible. Our services include: Chemical decontamination High pressure water jetting Automated cleaning jets Automated pipe cleaning system Filtration of washings Cold cutting Multi-disciplined teams Our multi-disciplined teams are trained to the highest level. This enables us to develop solutions that are tailored to deal with the unique requirements of your site. Calling on our experience and capability ensures solutions are delivered safely and efficiently. When working with NORM safety is paramount. Strict controls are enforced in all radiation controlled/ supervised areas, with our team adhering stringently to safety and duty of care legislation. We always aim to dovetail our service to your way of working, incorporating any local procedures and regulations, to ensure an efficient, safer and more collaborative approach. Veolia's Lerwick and Great Yarmouth sites Our fully permitted sites, at Greenhead Base, Lerwick in the Shetland Islands and Great Yarmouth on the East coast offer the ideal base for a wide range of NORM handling activities. The strategically positioned sites will fulfil a key role in the decommissioning of a range of oil and gas structures from the Atlantic Ocean and North Sea. Work undertaken at the site includes: Receipt Deconstruction Decontamination Repacking Cementation Storage Safe and secure NORM management High Temperature Incineration at Ellesmere Port Our High Temperature Incinerator (HTI) based at Ellesmere Port offers a safe and reliable solution to deal with NORM waste. It is one of the most technically advanced HTI facilities in Europe and is designed to treat a wide range of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes including those with radioactivity associated with them from a range of industry sectors. Not only does it provide the highest levels of secure destruction, it also offers outstanding environmental performance. State-of-the-art facilities The HTI process treats waste at temperatures of up to 1,200 C to guarantee complete thermal destruction efficiency. Once the chemical hazards have been treated, the waste is converted into a non-hazardous exempt slag. Our Ellesmere Port site can process up to 100,000 tonnes of waste per annum and in conjunction with our EPR10 permit offers market-leading radiological capacity. Your waste is in safe hands We process a variety of NORM wastes, including: Sludges, Scales, Soils, Waxes, Sand, Wood, PPE/soft waste, Filters, Aqueous and other liquids. With many feed process routes into the HTI, we are able to receive NORM in IBCs, FIBCs, Drums, Kegs and bagged in larger containers. Fully-compliant solution We are specialists at handling high profile or difficult materials, and have all the necessary permits and licences to do this safely. Our ISO 9001, ISO and OHSAS certification gives our clients the peace of mind that consistent and safe performance is paramount to our operation. ISO 9001 ISO ISO Compliance is central to everything we do at our best-in-class HTI facility. We work to exacting standards and our comprehensive waste acceptance criteria and highly skilled team means we retain an excellent health and safety record at Ellesmere Port.
