THE EAA 4

OUR MISSION & VISION Representing the entire value chain of the aluminium industry in Europe since Through environmental and technical expertise, economic and statistical analysis, scientific research, education and sharing of best practices, public affairs and communication activities, the EAA promotes aluminium s contribution to sustainable development whilst maintaining and improving the image of the industry, of the material, and of its applications. Being the voice of an internationally competitive and unique industry in Europe Creating the conditions for long-term growth Ensuring the benefits of aluminium products are widely recognised and giving our members a licence to operate 5

ALUMINIUM: A KEY PLAYER FOR EUROPE 36.8 billion Annual turnover 255,000 Employed directly by the aluminium industry in Europe 1million + Indirect jobs across Europe s value chain Aluminium is a young material and the most widely used non-ferrous metal Europe produces 16% of worldwide aluminium, half of which from recycled sources Main end-uses for aluminium products in Europe 8% of the earth crust Endlessly recyclable 75% of the aluminium ever produced is still in use 6

The Recycling Division 7

EAA RECYCLING DIVISION 8

EUROPE: Why have the Recycling Division in Brussels? Sound policy making and EU initiatives are the key to unlocking aluminium s potential, and can help companies operating in Europe to sustain their future. European Aluminium Association 90% of legislation and policy initiatives impacting the aluminium industry comes from Brussels. Market groups Primary Division Market & policy monitoring of primary production Extrusion Division Market & policy monitoring of extrusion production Divisions Rolling Division Market & policy monitoring of rolling production Recycling Division Market & policy monitoring of recycling activities Foil Division (EAFA e.v.) Market, promotion & development of the use of aluminium foil Our sector needs to work together with decision makers to ensure our industry stays competitive at international level. 10 Challenges and Solutions 10

Contributing to a competitive Europe EUROPE = THE WORLD LEADER IN RECYCLING Total Rest of the World Middle East Other Asia L. America China N. America Japan Europe Recycling production per capita (kg / pers) garczynska@eaa.be

Contributing to a competitive Europe CHALLENGES Recycling Statistics & Market Analysis: Knowledge to drive business Access to raw material: Where does the aluminium scrap go and how to get access to it? Need for (technical) expertise: Up to date information and acting on time garczynska@eaa.be

SOLUTIONS EAA Recycling Statistics & Market Analysis 6862kt Scrap consumed in EU in 2013 Quarterly Scrap intake data for wrought and casting alloys and for pre / post consumer scrap; trade data Quarterly Trade data for scrap Annual Capacity list of recycling plants in Europe; Recycling production data for Europe Employment data In EAA data base: 7% 7% 7% Recycling capacities in Europe 5% 11% 7% 9% Germany France Central and Eastern Europe Scandinavia Spain / Portugal garczynska@eaa.be 3% 29% 15% Italy UK Austria / Switzerland BeNeLux Other countries 13

CHALLENGES Access to raw material Major increase of aluminium legal exports Illegal shipments: 20-25% of all waste transports** Large amounts of waste** originating in the EU are illegally exported to developing countries in Africa and Asia * *COMMISSION STAFF WORKING PAPER IMPACT ASSESSMENT Regulation (EC) No 1013/2006 on shipments of waste ** all categories of waste

CHALLENGES Access to raw material In a growing market, EU production base declines EU primary production 11 Smelters out of 24 closed or curtailed since % EU27 primary production since % EU import dependency in 2013 Recycling + 22% scrap exports each year Since 2002 the EU is a net exporter of scrap, mainly to China In 2012 > tonnes were exported garczynska@eaa.be 15

CHALLENGES Access to raw material Country of destination

SOLUTION Access to raw material Advocacy speaking with one voice for the aluminium sector Circular economy Package EAA supports: the general direction towards a circular economy, ban on landfill of recyclable waste, new requirements on waste exports for recycling ( equivalent conditions as in the EU) Caution: Ambitious targets can only be met if adequate investments are made in more and better collection schemes, using advanced sorting and separation technologies garczynska@eaa.be POSITION ON WASTE: As much as possible of the aluminium scrap should remain in Europe More ambitious recycling targets Better collection and sorting for recycling Better and transparent reporting Better definitions of recycling Better monitoring the export of metal scrap The application of the correct LCA methodologies 17

SOLUTION Access to raw material STAKEHOLDERS FOCUS & ENGAGEMENT European Parliament 751 new MEPs European Commission 28 new Commissioners 18

SOLUTION to need to expertise EAA expertise for the recycling industry o Sustainability o Quality o Environment o Waste issues o Defending the industry interest by applying for exemptions of certain substances included in aluminium in European Directives like ELV and RoHS o Data mining o Waste legislation o Research and development o BREF o Chemical substances and REACH o Energy and climate change o Health and Safety o Industrial emissions o Recycling specific subjects garczynska@eaa.be
