1 MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET Creature Comforters Bach Flower Essences (Alcohol Preservative) Not subject to the Dangerous Goods IMDG Code and IATA Regulations. Not a Hazardous Substance according to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). SECTION 1: IDENTIFICATION Creature Comforters Flower Essences (Stock) with alcohol preservative (20% abv ethanol solution). Product Harmonized System (HS) Code: Brandy and water solutions containing a vibrational infusion of wildflowers, which are not detectable within the solution. Use Supplier Address Contact Details Flower Essences Creature Comforters Creature Comforters The Lawns, 4 Top Common, East Runton, Norfolk, NR27 9PW, UK A Digby Tel: (+44) alice@creaturecomforters.org SECTION 2: COMPOSITION / INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS Substance Name CAS Number Ratio Risk Phrase(s) Ethanol CH3CH2OH % v/v R11 Highly Flammable Water % v/v None No SECTION 3: HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION Emergency Overview SARA 313 Reportable Clear solution with a brandy/ethanol odour in 10ml, 30ml, 50ml glass bottles. No significant health or environmental hazards. Essences containing 20% abv ethanol have a flashpoint about 35 C. Ethanol solutions containing not more than 24% abv are NOT subject to the Dangerous Goods IMDG Code and IATA Regulations (heated flammable vapours can accumulate, but are not generated at a sufficient rate to continue to burn once the accumulated vapour 1 No

2 has been burnt). Poison Schedule Signal Word Acute Health Effects Chronic Health Effects Conditions aggravated Not applicable Not applicable Not likely to be harmful if swallowed as a bottle contains only a maximum of 30ml of solution. May cause Swallowed narcotic effects due to the alcohol content only in hypersensitive persons. Eye May cause eye irritation. Skin Unlikely to cause skin irritation Not a likely source of exposure. If a vapour or mist Inhaled is inhaled, it is unlikely to cause irritation. Long term health effects are highly unlikely from normal use. None other than alcohol hypersensitivity. SECTION 4: FIRST AID MEASURES Swallowed Eye Skin Inhaled Notes If swallowed accidentally, give water to drink to dilute. If swallowed accidentally, give water to drink to dilute. If this product comes into contact with skin, wash with soap and water. Remove to fresh air. Treat symptomatically. Public Health England offers advice on Ethanol: health effects and incident management. SECTION 5: FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES Contains 20% abv ethanol and can flash if heated to 35 C. Fire / Explosion Hazard Will not continue to burn as the ethanol vapours are not released at a sufficient rate to sustain burning. Thus products are not a significant fire hazard. Extinguishing Media Special Procedures Issues / Precautions Carbon Dioxide, dry chemical, foam, water. Move containers from the fire area if it can be done without risk. No special issues or precautions SECTION 6: ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES 2

3 Leaks and spillage Special Issues Prevent undiluted essences from entering drains or water courses. Stop leak and contain spill. Collect into labelled containers for disposal (see Section 13). After spills, wash area, preventing run off from entering drains. Stock essences have sufficient ethanol (20%) to flash if heated to 35 C but will not continue to burn as the ethanol vapours are not released at a sufficient rate. SECTION 7: HANDLING AND STORAGE The 30ml bottle sizes are so small there is not an increased fire risk. Handling and Procedures Storage Requirements Avoid spillage. Avoid contact with strong oxidising agents and strong acids. Store in a well ventilated area. Store away from sources of high heat, strong oxidising agents and strong acids. Keep containers closed at all times. Store away from direct sunlight or other light sources. SECTION 8: EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION Use good ventilation to maintain air levels below exposure standards. Control Methods Exposure Standards Air concentrations may be reduced by process modification, use of local exhaust ventilation, capturing substances at source, or other methods. If you believe air-borne concentrations of mists or vapours are high you are advised to modify the environment to reduce the problem. Time Weighted Average (TWA) exposure standards determined by the Health and Safety Executive for ethanol are Workplace Exposure Limit 8-Hour TWA : 1000ppm (1900mgm-3) 15 minute STEL : None. The other ingredients do not have an exposure standard. 3

4 Avoid eye contact. Consider the following personal protective equipment: Protective gloves to avoid unnecessary repeated skin contact (e.g. rubber or plastic). Safety glasses with side shields where splashes may occur. Personal Protection Where applicable refer to the following Standards: Personal eye-protection specifications e.g. American National Standard (ANSI Z ), European Standard (EN 166:1995) or British Standard (BS 2092). SECTION 9: PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES Protective glove specifications e.g. American Standard (ASTM D ), or European Standard (EN 374-1, EN 374-2, EN 374-3). Always wash hands before smoking, eating, drinking or using the toilet. Physical Form Solution Appearance / Odour Pale amber coloured liquid. Odour of diluted brandy or ethanol. SECTION 11: TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION Product Toxicity Data Acute Oral Toxicity LD50 (rat): >2000 mg/kg SECTION 12: ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION General Mobility Ecotoxicological Data Slightly water polluting substance. Avoid contaminating waterways Soluble in Water All ingredients are chemicals able to be readily biodegraded at the concentrations present once diluted in water. SECTION 13: DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS Material Container Dispose in accordance with Local, State and Federal EPA waste regulations. 10ml, 30ml, 50ml, 100ml bottles may normally be diluted and rinsed into the sewer system. Recycle containers wherever possible. SECTION 14: TRANSPORT INFORMATION ROAD and RAIL SEA AIR Not subject to the Dangerous Goods Code, nor the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code, nor the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations. Under UN 1170 ETHANOL SOLUTION: An aqueous solution containing not more than 24% alcohol by volume is not subject to this Code or Reg. (The solution is under 24% ABV). SECTION 15: REGULATORY INFORMATION Labelling Packaging Not Dangerous Goods, nor Hazardous Substance or nor Scheduled Poison. Must be in suitable packaging for handling, transport and storage, that will withstand normal handling, under the expected weather conditions and within the courier s terms of service.
