WHAT TYPE OF FILTER SHOULD I RECOMMEND? Let s take a look at the different types of filters commercially available today. You can also go to the corresponding page number for additional information. POLYPROPYLENE... 2 a thermoplastic polymer, typically has pleated, extruded, or spun fibers PAPER... 3 is pleated or wrapped on a highly porous core CARBON... 4 a nonmetallic organic element, uses granular activated carbon (or GAC for short) REDOX... 5 a catalytic media where substances or molecules are reduced and oxidized MIXED BED FILTERS are filters that incorporate two or more of the above listed medias for a greater and more complete removal of a complex range of impurities, including metals 1

OLYPROPYLENE POLYPROPYLENE This type of plastic filter media is used in many in-home drinking water treatment products. It s sole purpose is to remove sediment and large suspended particles from the water. Some filters use polypropylene by itself and others may use it as an outer layer to protect the life of more expensive carbon media inside. If large particles are not removed prior to the water coming into contact with the carbon inside, it would be totally overwhelmed, dramatically shortening the life of the carbon media. Many producers of polypropylene filter medias make claims that these will remove iron, rust, or suspended metal particles. Based on these claims, most would think these filters remove stain causing metals, when in fact THEY DO NOT. The only thing polypropylene filters remove is suspended particulate matter down to a given microsity. While it s better than nothing, there are plenty of particles that can slip between the fibers. A nominal micron rating means more or less, while the term absolute means exact. 2

PAPER Paper filters are probably the least effective of all types of filters and the shortest lived, whether molded on core, wrapped, pleated or otherwise. They should be used once and disposed of, as once wetted and stored they become a bacterial breeding ground. They vary widely in pricing and claims of functionality, but do no more than a plastic (polypropylene) filter and have a much, much shorter life. Neither the plastic or paper pre-filters available for recreational or potable water filtration remove any contaminants other than particles and sediment. This means all of the chemical contaminants and metals are still in the water. So be careful when selecting the proper filter for your pool. If you would like to know more about what types of contaminants are found in the U.S. water supply (both well and municipal) visit the EPA web site at and search for the Clean Water Act. PAPER 3

ARBON CARBON Carbon, or granular activated carbon (GAC), is the most used water filtration media in potable water treatment in the world. Carbon works in three ways: 1. Absorption - it has the mechanical ability to absorb a number of chemicals, many of which are dangerous 2. Adsorption - it bonds to a given contaminant and thus the contaminant is permanently removed, similar to antibodies in your immune system 3. Filtering - it physically blocks particles from passing through the carbon bed Carbon has a huge surface area, one cubic foot can cover an entire football field. This means a little can go a long way, requiring less maintenance and replacing of filters. Once the carbon has exhausted its useful life (due to chemical and particulate loading of the media) the filter needs to be disposed of and replaced. 4

CONTAMINANT REDOX Redox Media Performance LEVEL IN UNTREATED WATER (IN PPM) 5 REDOX Redox/catalytic filter media is specifically designed to eliminate harsh, toxic chemicals and metal in a solution (iron, lead, copper, arsenic, mercury, chromium 6). Redox media contain unique alloys that are dissimilar and when agitated inside the filter by flowing water, they release a static charge that breaks down the water molecule into powerful oxidizing agents. There are NO by-products, NO odors, and it is completely harmless. This chart demonstrates the dynamic filtration properties of REDOX media. 8 IXED BE MIXED BED FILTERS Mixed bed filters incorporate two or more filter media types, allowing for the best filtration possible. Not only do they remove particles and sediment, they also remove contaminants and metals on a molecular level. As you saw in the previous chart (page 5), Redox filters out many contaminants in a significant way. Performance is enhanced when carbon and polypropylene filters are added. 7 TECH filters are exclusively mixed bed media, using a combination of polypropylene, carbon AND redox. The water gets filtered through multiple stages: First, the polypropylene filters suspended particles down to 5 microns absolute. Next, the carbon medias remove a vast array of known chemical contaminants. Finally, the REDOX medias mitigate heavy metals and also destroy toxic chemicals of all kinds on contact. 6

7 TECH PRE-FILTERS CAN DO IT ALL! The polypropylene filters in our product remove suspended particles down to 5 microns absolute. Our carbon medias remove a vast array of known chemical contaminants. Our REDOX medias mitigate heavy metals and also destroy toxic chemicals of all kinds on contact. No other filter that can do all of this has ever been available for your pool! WHAT S IN YOUR WATER? Toxic inorganic chemicals Volatile organic chemicals Chlorinated by-products (THMs) Phosphates and Pesticides Iron and other metals as particulates Metals that are in solution Dead organics from city water Turbidity and suspended solids Oils and polymers Taste, color, and odors (well water) 7 Tech pre-filters remove them all! 8

IT ALL STARTS WITH THE FILL WATER Many of the water quality issues consumers experience can be directly attributed to the very water they are filling their pools with. Metals, contaminants and chemicals are not only bad for pools, but can be dangerous to humans. You need more than just one type of filter. The better the fill water, the less problems your customers will have! THE RIGHT WAY MADE EASY ATTACH 7 TECH FILTER TO HOSE FILL YOUR SPA, HOT TUB, OR POOL! 7 TECH firmly believes that There s no such thing as too much filtration. 9

SPA/SWIM SPA pre-filter Our spa filter uses all 3 polypropylene, carbon and REDOX filter medias for a total of5 different filter stages. up to 7,500 gallons! 10

SWIMMING POOL pre-filter Our pool filter uses 5 different polypropylene filters, 2 different types of food grade GAC and 2 different types of REDOX/CATALYTIC media for a total of9 different filter stages. up to 25,000 gallons! 11
